Position: Sr. EMC Design Engineer

Location: Irvine, CA

Overview

A leading automotive technology company is seeking a Senior EMC Design Engineer to support the development of advanced vehicle electronic systems and Electronic Control Units (ECUs). This position is responsible for EMC-focused design reviews, validation planning, troubleshooting, and collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams to ensure compliance with automotive and commercial EMC requirements.

The ideal candidate will possess strong EMC engineering expertise, hands-on hardware experience, and the ability to influence product design from concept through validation. This is a highly collaborative role working across electrical, mechanical, RF, and systems engineering teams.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review electrical and mechanical designs to ensure EMC compliance and electromagnetic survivability.
  • Develop and execute EMC test plans for low-voltage and high-voltage electronic systems.
  • Conduct EMC analysis, validation, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Identify and document ECU susceptibilities related to ESD, radiated emissions, conducted emissions, and transient disturbances.
  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers to improve EMC performance throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Define and validate grounding, bonding, shielding, and filtering requirements.
  • Support design reviews and provide recommendations for EMC risk mitigation.
  • Analyze test data and develop corrective action plans for EMC-related issues.
  • Participate in product development and certification activities for automotive electronic systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 5-7+ years of EMC engineering experience.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical test equipment and laboratory environments.
  • Strong understanding of electronic hardware design and EMC principles.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and circuit designs.
  • Experience supporting product development from design through validation.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Required Work Experience

  • Experience reviewing and validating electronic hardware designs for EMC compliance.
  • Experience developing and executing EMC test plans.
  • Experience with automotive or complex electronic systems.
  • Experience supporting EMC testing, certification, and design optimization.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, Antenna Design, or Applied Electromagnetics.
  • Experience designing power supplies, voltage regulators, and power distribution systems.
  • Experience with transmission line design and signal integrity concepts.
  • Experience with automotive EMC certifications and regulatory standards.
  • Experience with circuit design and PCB layout reviews.
  • Familiarity with RF systems, wireless communications, and antenna performance considerations.
