Linux Systems Administrator with Security Clearance

Job Description
This hybrid Linux Administrator role supports a Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) environment in the King George / Dahlgren, VA area. You will administer and optimize Linux-based servers and workstations, support complex multi-system test environments, and collaborate closely with developers, engineers, and project teams to ensure reliable, secure, and high-performing systems. Responsibilities
Provide advanced technical problem solving and in-depth consulting for Linux system operations in an RDT&E environment.

Administer, develop, and manage Linux-based servers, workstations, and clustered systems operating in unclassified network environments. Work with multiple intercommunicating devices across several systems to support integrated test and operational environments. Develop, analyze, design, and implement modifications to system software to improve performance, correct errors, or meet specific operational needs. Participate in weekly cross-functional meetings to plan, advise, and define operational environment requirements, deployments, and adjustments.

Support and participate in scheduled testing events, taking ownership of troubleshooting across multiple systems to ensure on-time delivery of test priorities. Assist in planning new hardware acquisitions, including evaluating options, developing operating policies, interacting with vendors, and coordinating with other projects. Provide Linux support for application installation, license management, software tracking and distribution, and backup and recovery of system configurations and user data.

Assist users with account applications and approvals, ensuring appropriate user access and adherence to security and access policies. Partner with software developers to implement new proprietary installations and updates, providing Linux troubleshooting assistance as required. Administer and support a wide range of Linux applications and tools, including PTP, iRIG, Kickstart, Bash, UDEV, NMCLI, and GDM. Participate in daily Scrum ceremonies to coordinate Jira tasks, epics, and sprints and to align system administration work with project priorities.

Travel as needed to perform system installations, upgrades, and testing at remote or on-site locations. Draft, update, and refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for development updates and new operational environment releases, using strong written and verbal communication skills. Perform other related duties as assigned to support the mission and evolving technical requirements. Essential Skills
Minimum of four to five (4–5) years of demonstrated experience in system administration of Linux-based servers and Linux-based workstations.

At least 3+ years of hands-on experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or similar distributions, including workstation support or server management. Strong Linux system management skills, including command-line administration, patching, and repository (repo) management. Experience with Linux administration tools and technologies such as Bash, UDEV, NMCLI, GDM, Kickstart, PTP, and iRIG. Experience administering Linux systems in environments that use multiple intercommunicating devices and complex system integrations.

Experience with hardware from HP and Dell, including installation, configuration, and troubleshooting. Ability to participate effectively in daily Scrums and use tools like Jira for task, epic, and sprint coordination. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft and correct Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). High School Diploma or equivalent. TS (Top Secret) security clearance. IAT Level II certification. Ability and willingness to travel to support installations and testing.

Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with software developers, engineers, and cross-functional stakeholders. Additional Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. Experience working in a Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) environment. Experience supporting unclassified network environments with structured change and configuration management. Familiarity with Ansible or other configuration management and automation tools. Experience with Red Hat-based distributions in both server and workstation roles.

Comfort working in hybrid environments that blend on-site and remote responsibilities. Interest in pursuing additional technical certifications; the organization supports certification testing upon successful completion. Experience participating in or leading cross-functional planning meetings and technical reviews. Work Environment
