Job description
Area Manager
Direct Hire | Davenport, IA | On-Site
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Synergis' client is a national leader in yard management and supply chain services, with more than 5,000 employees nationwide. They are seeking an Area Manager to lead multi-site operations across their Davenport, Iowa area.
This area currently spans three customer sites running 24/7, with roughly 40 to 45 drivers and auditors and an equipment footprint of approximately 40 to 45 trailers and 20 trucks. The customer base includes high-profile manufacturing accounts with demanding service expectations, and the Area Manager owns both the operational performance and the commercial relationship across them.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Area Manager is accountable for safe, efficient, and profitable operations across multiple customer sites within a defined geography. This role carries direct P&L responsibility for the area and is the level at which financial performance, customer relationships, and site leadership come together.
It is a leadership-of-leaders role. The Area Manager carries direct reports at the management level and leads the site teams across the area - developing them, holding them accountable, and raising the standard of how each location runs. Success in the seat looks less like personally solving problems at a site and more like building leaders who solve them.
The customer-facing component is substantial. These are enterprise-level relationships where service performance is measured closely and where the operator is held to the customer's own metrics. The Area Manager keeps those relationships strong, acts as an advocate for the account internally, and is expected to speak to performance with data and credibility.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Multi-Site Operations
- Oversee day-to-day operations across all sites in the assigned area, with a focus on safety, consistent service delivery, and customer satisfaction.
- Monitor performance metrics across locations, identify process improvements, and resolve operational issues affecting service levels.
- Ensure staffing coverage and operational continuity across shifts and sites, including during absences, turnover, and volume swings.
- Provide regular, clear updates and insight to regional leadership.
Customer and Financial Performance
- Analyze P&L performance for the area and report insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customer leadership at each site, attending customer meetings and aligning service delivery to expectations.
- Understand and manage to customer-defined performance metrics, recognizing that service failures carry direct consequences for the customer and their own commitments.
- Act as an advocate for the account internally while holding the operation to standard.
- Support commercial continuity and contribute to retention and renewal of the accounts in the area.
Leadership and Development
- Lead and manage direct reports at the management level, driving safe operations, strong customer service, and driver engagement across the area.
- Develop the leadership bench - coaching direct reports on accountability, customer handling, performance conversations, and operational decision making.
- Provide end-to-end leadership across the employee lifecycle, including recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, mentoring, and team development.
- Train new and existing managers and drivers to maintain high performance, safety, and service standards.
- Build and sustain a culture of ownership and accountability across the area.
Safety and Equipment Management
- Ensure accountability for safety standards across direct reports, site teams, and drivers.
- Conduct and oversee safety observations and coaching across the area.
- Oversee equipment readiness across sites, including maintenance, rentals, and vendor-supported repairs.
- Maintain current awareness of industry regulations and compliance requirements.
- Respond to incidents and after-hours escalations, including outside of scheduled working hours when the operation requires it.
Reporting and Analysis
- Interpret operational and financial reporting across the area, identify variance between expected and actual performance, and determine root cause.
- Build and present reporting that explains what is driving results, not simply what activity occurred.
- Use operational data to inform staffing, coverage, and process decisions across sites.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Three or more years of progressive experience in logistics, transportation, 3PL, warehousing, or supply chain operations, including at least one year in a leadership or supervisory capacity. Candidates who have led other managers will stand out.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze P&L performance and speak to the drivers behind the numbers.
- Valid CDL A license strongly preferred. This is not a driving role - the expectation is that managers run the business rather than operate equipment - but the license is valued as a contingency when a site is short. Candidates who previously held a CDL, or who have operated comparable heavy equipment, will also be considered.
- Proven customer relationship management at the account level, including experience holding a demanding customer relationship steady when service is under pressure.
- Track record of developing people - growing leaders beneath them and building bench strength rather than operating as the single point of resolution.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to work in reporting and translate it into operational action. Proficiency in Microsoft Office required; familiarity with E-Plan and Geotab is a plus.
- Experience using or willingness to learn approved AI and automation tools is a plus.
- Working knowledge of domestic carrier services, rules, and regulations.
- Understanding and prevention of critical safety issues.
- Background in a structured operating environment with defined standards and processes is valued, including candidates stepping across from larger organizations.
- Strong business acumen with an ownership and commercial mindset.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the credibility to lead by example.
- Willingness to devote the hours necessary to complete the task at hand, including responding to urgent matters outside normal working hours.
- Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field is a plus.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Base salary range of $75,000 to $85,000, commensurate with experience.
- Quarterly bonus program equal to one week of salary per quarter, which works out to roughly 7.5% annually on top of base.
- Full-time, exempt, salaried position.
- On-site and based in the Davenport, Iowa area, with regular travel between sites within the assigned area.
- Operations run 24/7 and the role carries after-hours responsiveness.
- Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage with employer HSA contributions, a 401(k) with an immediately vested dollar-for-dollar match on the first 4%, an Employee Ownership Program, and paid time off
The compensation range for this position is $ 75000.00 to $85000.00. (dependent on factors including but not limited to client requirements, experience, statutory considerations, and location). Benefits available to full-time employees: medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401k and commuter benefits.
