Overview

Employment in this role is conditional upon successful execution of the contract by the client.

The Work:

The Functional Tester will be responsible for planning, executing, and documenting functional, regression, and smoke testing activities within a modern services-based application environment. This role is critical to validating system requirements, ensuring traceability, and enhancing the delivery of high-quality features. The position calls for expertise in manual testing and familiarity with modern automated testing tools such as Swagger/OpenAPI and unit-level testing frameworks.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:
  • Test Planning & Execution: Develop and execute requirement-level functional tests, smoke tests, and regression test cycles to verify system functionality.
  • Test Case Development: Create, document, and maintain comprehensive test cases, test data, and results using Jira or similar tools.
  • Defect Management: Validate defects, isolate and reproduce issues, and manage their lifecycle, including coordinating retests as needed.
  • Accessibility Compliance: Ensure that application functionality adheres to Section 508 accessibility requirements.
  • Automated Testing Support: Contribute to automated testing activities with tools such as Swagger/OpenAPI, validating APIs and reviewing unit tests.
  • Traceability Management: Ensure end-to-end traceability between requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, and corresponding test cases to ensure alignment and coverage.
  • Collaboration: Actively participate in backlog refinement, requirement clarification, and sprint planning sessions with the Product Owner, Business Analysts, and delivery team.
  • Feedback & Risk Assessment: Provide prompt feedback to developers and product team members, identifying system behavior, edge cases, and potential risk areas.
  • Integration Testing: Support integration testing efforts, including the verification of data flows across various application and service components.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Qualifications - Here's What You Need:

Candidates should demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to adapt to evolving responsibilities as outlined by the client.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in functional, regression, and smoke testing across software applications.
  • Proven expertise in performing structured manual testing, including requirement-based testing and defect validation.
  • Familiarity with API testing methodologies and tools such as Swagger or OpenAPI.
  • Foundational understanding or exposure to automated testing concepts, including unit-level testing frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Agile delivery methodologies and iterative testing approaches.
  • Strong ability to translate business and technical requirements into concise, repeatable, and traceable test cases.
  • Hands-on experience with test management tools such as Jira, Confluence, or similar platforms for documentation, reporting, and tracking tasks.
  • Familiarity with Section 508 compliance and accessibility standards for software applications.
  • Solid communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Active Top Secret Security Clearance.
  • Must be able to pass a background check. May require additional background checks as required by projects and/or clients at any time during employment.

  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with high-level attention to detail.

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work well independently as well as on a multi-functional team.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately
  • Proficient in MS Office, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in testing modern services-based architectures, including microservices and APIs.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines and their role in automated testing.
  • Working knowledge of performance testing tools or concepts.
  • Any relevant certifications, such as Certified Software Tester (CSTE), ISTQB Foundation Level, or Certified Scrum Master (CSM).

Reports to: Program Manager

Working Conditions:
  • Professional office environment, with the ability to work onsite in the main office.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed to meet the demands of this position.
  • Must be able to establish a productive and professional workspace.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time looking at computer screen.
  • May be asked to work a flexible schedule which may include holidays.
  • May be asked to travel for business or professional development purposes.
  • May be asked to work hours outside of normal business hours.
