Technical Artist (Unreal Engine Optimization)
Location: REMOTE (must be willing to work PST core hours)
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Technical Artist with deep Unreal Engine optimization expertise. This role will focus on identifying, analyzing, and resolving performance bottlenecks across a live mobile game environment, with a particular emphasis on Android optimization while maintaining visual quality across higher-end PC hardware. The ideal candidate combines strong technical art skills with a performance-first mindset and has extensive experience optimizing complex Unreal Engine projects for multiple hardware tiers.
Responsibilities

• Analyze and optimize game content to improve performance across Android device tiers.
• Establish and refine asset performance budgets for VFX, materials, meshes, textures, UI, and other game content.
• Partner with engineers, artists, and production teams to diagnose and resolve performance issues.
• Evaluate rendering, VFX, and asset pipelines to identify inefficiencies and optimization opportunities.
• Profile frame time, memory usage, GPU/CPU performance, and rendering costs using Unreal Engine diagnostic tools.
• Investigate and mitigate performance degradation occurring during extended gameplay sessions.
• Support development of automated testing and performance validation processes.
• Improve visibility into performance metrics through tooling, data analysis, and diagnostics.
• Make actionable recommendations that balance performance requirements with visual quality goals.
• Serve as a subject matter expert on optimization opportunities across the game experience.

Key Areas of Focus

• Excessive VFX and emitter counts within effects-driven gameplay.
• Optimization of legacy assets migrated from previous technology stacks.
• Poor baseline performance on low-end Android devices.
• Memory usage and memory leak investigation.
• Hitching and frame-time instability.
• UI performance issues, including health bars and other real-time interface elements.
• Memory consumption outside core gameplay systems.
• Performance degradation when reconnecting to active matches.
• Performance regression across consecutive matches within the same session.

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in Technical Art, Rendering Optimization, or Performance Engineering for games.
• Expert-level knowledge of Unreal Engine profiling, optimization, and performance debugging workflows.
• Strong understanding of rendering pipelines, GPU/CPU bottlenecks, and mobile graphics optimization.
• Experience optimizing live-service games for Android and/or iOS platforms.
• Proven ability to profile and improve frame time, memory utilization, and runtime stability.
• Strong understanding of VFX performance optimization, including particle systems, materials, and shaders.
• Experience working closely with artists and engineers to implement scalable performance solutions.
• Ability to communicate technical findings and optimization strategies to cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting AAA live-service games.
• Deep expertise with Unreal Engine 4 and/or Unreal Engine 5 optimization.
• Experience developing performance analysis tools or automated testing frameworks.
• Familiarity with mobile device performance profiling tools.
• Experience working with cross-regional development teams.

Success Metrics
Success in this role will be measured by improvements in frame time performance, memory utilization, stability, and reduction of performance regressions, while retaining visual quality and user responsiveness.
