Contract Lead Developer | Java/AWS | Active SC Clearance Required

Are you an experienced Lead Developer with strong Java expertise and a proven track record of leading technical teams? We are supporting a global consultancy delivering a high-priority programme for a public sector client and are seeking a hands-on technical lead to oversee a small development team, drive delivery, and uphold high engineering standards.

Scala experience is highly desirable, but the client is open to a strong Lead Java Developer who is willing to learn Scala on the job.

This is an opportunity to combine technical leadership with hands-on development in a complex, mission-critical environment.

Key Details

  • Location: Fully remote
  • Contract: 12 Months - Inside IR35
  • Security: Active SC clearance is mandatory

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of 2 to 5 developers, coordinating priorities and ensuring delivery against deadlines.
  • Drive software development using Java and Scala, maintaining high standards of code quality and engineering best practice.
  • Provide technical leadership across AWS cloud services, CI/CD pipelines and cloud management.
  • Oversee API development, microservices and containerisation using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Work closely with senior stakeholders to communicate technical solutions and support critical delivery milestones.
  • Develop delivery roadmaps, manage competing priorities and ensure appropriate quality standards.
  • Mentor developers and support the development of technical skills across the team.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Mandatory: Proven experience leading and managing a team of 2 to 5 software developers
  • Mandatory: Active SC security clearance
  • Strong hands-on experience with Java and ideally Scala.
  • Strong experience with AWS and cloud-based software development.
  • Solid understanding of API development, microservices and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes and modern software delivery practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage technical teams and senior stakeholders.
  • Experience managing delivery priorities, maintaining engineering standards and mentoring developers.
