Data Scientist SME with Security Clearance

We are currently seeking a talented and motivated Data Scientist SME for a Part-Time position.
Role Summary The Data Scientist SME will lead the design and evaluation of AI, GenAI, machine-learning and agentic approaches for regulatory workflows, knowledge management, document processing, data quality and decision support.
Responsibilities

• Identify high-value AI/GenAI opportunities within existing USFWS processes.
• Design agentic workflows with appropriate levels of human oversight.
• Develop NLP/LLM approaches to analyze unstructured text and historical records.
• Support AI-assisted knowledge-management capabilities.
• Develop ML-assisted approaches for:
• data classification;
• anomaly detection;
• data-quality checks;
• record validation;
• document extraction;
• controlled-vocabulary mapping.
• Define confidence thresholds and human-in-the-loop review processes.
• Establish precision, recall and other model-quality measures.
• Design approaches for retrieval, summarization and analysis of scientific/regulatory knowledge.
• Work with data engineers to prepare AI-ready datasets.
• Ensure explainability, traceability, reproducibility and responsible use of AI.
• Develop reference implementations in Python and/or R.

The SOO requires AI-first generative and agentic optimization but also demands measurable classifier precision/recall and human review for low-confidence results.
Recommended Recruiting Qualifications

• 8-12+ years in data science, ML or AI.
• 3+ years modern GenAI/LLM experience strongly preferred.
• Python expert.
• Strong NLP, embeddings, RAG, classification and information-extraction experience.
• Agentic AI / multi-step AI workflow design.
• Model evaluation and responsible AI.
• OCR/document intelligence experience desirable.
• AWS AI/data-service experience.
• Federal or regulated-industry experience highly desirable.
• Experience handling sensitive/CUI/PII data preferred.
