Principal Backend Software Engineer - Dental EHR Systems

Athenahealth is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead design and development of our electronic dental record capabilities within our cloud-based EHR platform. You will architect scalable services, integrate with clinical and practice management workflows, and ensure security, reliability, and performance for high-volume healthcare environments. Partner with product, clinicians, and data teams to deliver compliant, user-centered features that improve dental care delivery, documentation, and revenue cycle outcomes in a complex health-tech ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Design and own architecture for electronic dental record services within Athenahealth's EHR platform
• Develop scalable, secure, and reliable backend services and APIs for dental workflows
• Collaborate with product managers, UX, and clinicians to translate requirements into technical solutions
• Ensure compliance with security, privacy, and healthcare standards including HIPAA and interoperability protocols
• Guide technical direction, code quality, and best practices across engineering teams
• Mentor and coach engineers, performing design and code reviews
• Optimize performance, availability, and observability in a high-volume cloud environment
• Partner with data and integration teams to support analytics, reporting, and system interoperability
