Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Intern Java Developer with a foundational understanding of Java programming, backend technologies, and emerging AI-assisted software development tools.

This opportunity is ideal for entry level candidates, final-year students, or early-career professionals looking to gain hands-on experience in backend application development and modern software engineering practices.

Candidates should have a basic understanding of Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, SQL databases, and object-oriented programming. They should also demonstrate practical exposure to AI through college projects, internships, personal projects, or self-learning initiatives.

The ideal candidate will be eager to learn, collaborate with experienced developers, and contribute to real-world software development projects while exploring AI-powered development tools and cloud-native technologies.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in developing, maintaining, and enhancing backend applications using Java and Spring Boot.
• Support the development and integration of REST APIs for application functionality and system integrations.
• Write basic SQL queries and assist with database-related development and troubleshooting.
• Learn and contribute to implementing business rules using rules engines such as Drools or Kogito.
• Write clean, readable, maintainable, and testable code under the guidance of senior developers.
• Assist in writing and executing unit tests using JUnit and Mockito.
• Work with Linux environments, command-line tools, and basic shell scripting.
• Use GitHub for source control, repository management, and collaborative development.
• Gain exposure to containerized applications and Kubernetes.
• Learn and work with Microsoft Azure services and cloud infrastructure.
• Explore AI-assisted development tools to improve coding productivity, testing, debugging, and development workflows.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to troubleshoot technical issues and deliver reliable software solutions.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or currently pursuing a relevant degree.
• Basic knowledge of Java programming and object-oriented programming concepts.
• Foundational understanding of:
• Java and object-oriented programming.
• Spring Boot and REST APIs.
• Basic microservices concepts.
• JPA/Hibernate and API integration.
• Maven or Gradle.
• JUnit and Mockito.
• Basic understanding of SQL and relational databases, including queries, joins, and database design.
• Familiarity with C/C++ programming fundamentals.
• Basic knowledge of Linux environments, command-line tools, and shell scripting.
• Familiarity with GitHub and basic repository management.
• Basic understanding of cloud computing concepts.
• Demonstrated interest in AI and AI-assisted software development through academic projects, internships, personal projects, or hands-on learning.

Preferred Qualifications

• Exposure to AI-assisted software development tools such as:
• Claude Code.
• OpenAI Codex.
• GitHub Copilot.
• Academic or personal projects demonstrating the use of AI tools to generate or review code, automate tasks, improve testing, or troubleshoot technical issues.
• Basic familiarity with business rules engines such as Drools or Kogito.
• Exposure to Kubernetes, Docker, or containerized applications.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Azure cloud services.
• Interest in the dental or medical insurance industry, particularly insurance claims processing.
• Candidates located in or near Oakland or San Francisco, California, are preferred.

Required AI Project Exposure

Candidates should be prepared to discuss at least one college, internship, or personal project involving AI or AI-assisted software development.

Examples of relevant experience include:

• Using Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, or GitHub Copilot to assist with application development.
• Using AI tools to generate unit tests, debug code, or identify potential defects.
• Integrating AI capabilities into a Java or Spring Boot application.
• Using AI to automate repetitive development tasks or improve project workflows.
• Exploring AI tools as part of academic assignments, coding exercises, or personal projects.

Candidates should be able to explain:

• The objective of the project.
• The technologies and tools used.
• How AI was used in the project.
• Their individual contribution.
• The practical benefits achieved, such as improved development efficiency, reduced manual effort, better testing, or easier troubleshooting.

Specific numerical improvements are welcome when supported by actual project results.
