Junior Functional/Automation Tester Public Trust

Job Title: Junior Functional/Automation Tester
Location: Remote
Clearance: Public Trust

Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated Junior Functional/Automation Tester to join our software quality assurance team. This is an entry-level opportunity for a candidate with foundational software testing knowledge and some hands-on exposure to test automation, scripting, APIs, and modern development practices.

The ideal candidate will support functional and regression testing, develop and maintain automated tests, validate APIs, document defects and test results, and work collaboratively within an Agile software development environment. Candidates with internship, co-op, academic project, or equivalent practical experience are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute functional, regression, and other software testing activities based on defined requirements and acceptance criteria.

  • Create, maintain, and execute manual and automated test cases.

  • Develop or maintain automated tests using applicable scripting languages and testing frameworks.

  • Perform basic API testing, including request/response validation, status codes, and authentication.

  • Identify, document, and track software defects through the defect lifecycle.

  • Clearly document test results, defects, test evidence, and testing status.

  • Use Git and follow standard development workflows, including branching, pull requests, and code reviews.

  • Support CI/CD-based testing and gain experience with pipeline tools such as Jenkins or GitLab.

  • Apply secure practices when handling test data, including least-privilege principles, protecting sensitive information, and safe logging.

  • Collaborate with developers, testers, and other technical team members to troubleshoot issues and improve software quality.

  • Follow established testing, development, security, and documentation standards.

  • Participate in team activities and incorporate feedback to continuously improve testing skills and practices.

Required Qualifications

  • 1 2 years of experience in software testing, quality assurance, test automation, software development, or a related field.

  • Internship, co-op, academic projects, or equivalent practical experience may be considered.

  • Foundational understanding of:

    • Functional testing

    • Regression testing

    • Defect lifecycle

    • Software testing concepts and methodologies

  • Some hands-on experience creating or maintaining automated tests using common tools or frameworks.

  • Basic understanding of API testing, including:

    • Request and response validation

    • HTTP status codes

    • Authentication basics

  • Familiarity with at least one scripting or programming language, such as Java, JavaScript, and/or SQL.

  • Familiarity with Git, including branching, pull requests, and code review workflows.

  • Basic understanding of CI/CD concepts and pipeline-based testing.

  • Understanding of secure test-data handling, including least privilege, data protection, and safe logging practices.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to clearly document test results, defects, and technical findings.

  • Strong collaboration skills and willingness to learn and follow established team standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to Agile/Scrum delivery practices and SDLC concepts.

  • Familiarity with Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) or change/configuration management tools such as VersionOne or ServiceNow.

  • Introductory knowledge of cloud and messaging technologies, such as:

    • Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform)

    • Pub/Sub

    • Kafka

  • Interest in learning distributed systems testing.

  • Exposure to Docker and container fundamentals.

  • Understanding of modern application architectures such as microservices and serverless.

  • Familiarity with approved AI-assisted development/testing tools, such as OpenCode, Claude Code, or Gemini Vertex AI.

  • Exposure to automated testing frameworks and modern QA practices.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field is preferred.

  • Equivalent practical experience may be considered.
