Job Description

COG Research Foundation, LLC (Research Foundation) is a California 501(c)(3) entity founded in 2024 to serve as a fiscal sponsor to support research programs by providing legal, fiduciary, and administrative oversight for the program. The Research Foundation serves as the fiscal sponsor for the Children’s Oncology Group (COG).

COG, a member of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN), is the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research.  COG unites over 13,500 experts in childhood cancer at more than 220 leading children’s hospitals, universities, and cancer centers across the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Saudi Arabia to conduct more than 50 active clinical trials, with approximately 9,500 participants registered each year in the fight against childhood cancer.

All staff are employed through the Research Foundation. This role will be in service to COG.

The software Technical Writer (TW) works under the immediate supervision of the Sr. Technical Writer/Business Analyst (BA) to maintain and create technical documentation such as, but not limited to, user guides, use cases, business requirements and reference manuals. The TW works with users, developers, and other information system personnel to gain the appropriate level of understanding in order to translate complex, technical information into various required documentation for any given technical project.

The COG Research Foundation, LLC is a 100% remote employer, though some travel may be required.  Employee must reside within the United States.

Full salary range for this position: $77,625 to $112,620 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $77,625 (minimum) to $95,123 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES 

  • Independently creates, maintains, and enhances user guides, style sheets, templates, and automated review processes using RoboHelp 2022, ensuring consistency, quality, and compliance with documentation standards.
  • Analyzes, authors, edits, and maintains technical documentation for software applications i.e., technical reference manuals, user guides and online user manual, training material, and other project and system related documentation.
  • Develops, reviews and maintains procedural documentation, including department policies and procedures (SOPs), work instructions, audit documentation, and disaster recovery plans, ensuring accuracy and alignment with business and regulatory requirements.
  • Partners with the BA and supports business analysis activities by assisting the development and review of Business Requirements, Release Notes, User Acceptance Testing (UAT) plans, post-deployment documentation, and other project deliverables as needed.
  • Maintains and governs the IT System Documentation Library, exercising discretion in document finalization, publication, version control, and template administration to maintain document integrity and accessibility.
  • Collaborates proactively with IT staff, project teams, and organizational subject matter experts throughout the software development lifecycle to assess documentation needs, gather complex information, and determine the most effective content strategy and deliverables.
  • Applies substantial independent judgment and discretion in prioritizing assignments, resolving documentation challenges, recommending process improvements, and ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality documentation.
  • Performs other duties and special projects, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of professional experience as a technical writer or related writing experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Technical Writing, Communications, Computer Science or related field, or substitute with 4 additional years of technical writing experience.

Other Qualifications

  • RoboHelp, Microsoft Office Suite, Visio, PowerPoint and SharePoint skills.
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office Templates and maintain the established IT documentation
  • Experience with software development methodologies and processes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of programming, operating systems and/or networking concepts is desirable.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Four (4) or more years of professional experience as a technical writer or related writing experience.
