Java full Stack developer

Position Overview
We are Looking for a Java Developer to support existing enterprise applications within its manufacturing IT environment. This role will focus primarily on production application support, troubleshooting, defect resolution, and maintenance of legacy applications, with additional responsibilities for Java development and enhancements.
The developer will help maintain business continuity while the existing technical lead focuses on integrating a new Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) with legacy systems. The ideal candidate is an independent problem-solver with hands-on Java 8 experience, strong SQL skills, and the ability to investigate unfamiliar code in an environment with limited documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Provide production support and maintenance for existing Java-based enterprise applications.
Troubleshoot application incidents, investigate root causes, and resolve issues involving application logic, databases, interfaces, performance, and deployments.
Design, develop, enhance, and maintain Java applications, services, integrations, and application functionality as needed.
Analyze business requirements and translate them into maintainable software solutions.
Work with legacy code to understand existing business logic and address issues arising from evolving manufacturing processes.
Perform unit and integration testing, support system and user acceptance testing, and resolve software defects.
Work with Oracle databases and SQL to investigate data-related issues and troubleshoot application/database interactions.
Collaborate with business users, technical teams, and stakeholders to understand reported issues, determine ownership, and coordinate resolutions.
Address application vulnerabilities and implement code changes to remediate identified security issues.
Use Caterpillar-approved development tools and repositories, including Azure DevOps and GitHub.
Participate in technical reviews, deployment activities, production stabilization, and knowledge transfer as required.
Maintain technical documentation for completed work and support transition activities at the end of the engagement.
Required Qualifications
Approximately 3–7 years of hands-on Java development experience, with at least 3 years preferred as a minimum.
Strong practical experience with Java 8, particularly in production and legacy application environments.
Experience with Spring MVC and full-stack Java application development, including backend and frontend application logic.
Strong SQL skills and practical experience with Oracle databases.
Significant experience in production application support, incident investigation, troubleshooting, and defect resolution.
Ability to independently analyze unfamiliar code, identify root causes, and resolve technical issues with minimal supervision.
Experience maintaining legacy applications, including systems with incomplete documentation or unclear requirements.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
Willingness to work on-site at Caterpillar's Decatur or East Peoria, Illinois, location five days per week.
Willingness to participate in a mandatory 24/7/365 on-call rotation approximately once every four weeks, covering Monday-to-Monday, including nights and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Azure DevOps and GitHub.
Experience with application security, secure coding practices, and vulnerability remediation.
Familiarity with GitHub Copilot or other Caterpillar-approved development assistance tools.
Exposure to C#, , or DB2.
Experience supporting manufacturing, industrial, or other complex enterprise applications.
Ability to work effectively in a less-structured, waterfall-oriented environment.
Work Environment
This position is primarily focused on approximately 80% production support and 20% development, although the balance may vary depending on business priorities and production incidents.
The developer should be comfortable working with limited documentation, investigating issues reported through multiple channels, including tickets, email, phone, Microsoft Teams, and direct user requests, and coordinating with other teams when issues fall outside the application's scope.
A bachelor's or master's degree is not mandatory. Candidates with an associate degree or equivalent relevant experience may be considered based on their technical skills and practical experience.
