SENIOR RESEARCH SCIENTIST - Maritime Defence
Location: Dorset – Dorchester
Employment: Permanent
Working pattern: Full-time onsite 4 days a week with 1 day WFH
Security Clearance: Must be eligible to achieve full UK SC Clearance
I’m currently recruiting for a Senior Research Scientist to join a highly skilled technical team delivering advanced research and technology within underwater acoustics for maritime defence applications.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Scientist or Engineer with a strong background in underwater acoustics, sonar, signal processing or related research areas.
You’ll work alongside mathematicians, scientists, oceanographers and engineers, taking technical ownership of research projects and helping develop future technologies and capabilities for complex underwater environments.
Key areas of work include:
• Underwater acoustics and sonar systems
• Signal processing, including detection, classification, localisation and tracking
• Sonar performance modelling
• Acoustic source and sensor modelling
• Data analysis and visualisation
• Numerical simulation of complex phenomena
• Ocean science and underwater environments
• Data science, machine learning and AI
• Laboratory experimentation and potentially trials
• Exploitation of research into future defence capabilities and products
What we’re looking for:
• Degree in Mathematics, Science, Engineering or another relevant technical discipline
• Strong knowledge and experience within underwater acoustics, ideally spanning sources, sensors, signal processing and the underwater environment
• Maritime defence experience would be highly advantageous
• Experience technically leading projects and/or small teams of researchers and engineers
• Ability to deliver technical projects to agreed time, cost and quality requirements
• Strong written communication skills, including technical reports, proposals and bid contributions
• Experience developing technical solutions in response to customer requirements
• Ability to communicate complex technical information and present effectively to stakeholders
• Experience identifying opportunities to develop research into real-world capability or products
The Senior Research Scientist will also work closely with technical experts, project managers and key stakeholders to develop technical solutions, shape future research strategies and support new business opportunities.
