Release Train Engineer
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Role Overview
The Release Train Engineer will facilitate the planning, coordination, and execution of release activities to support global delivery objectives. This role requires hands-on experience provisioning and managing cloud infrastructure, building robust deployment automation, and deploying API services on containerized platforms. The selected professional will collaborate closely with development, architecture, security, and operations teams to establish repeatable, secure, and reliable deployment processes across multiple environments. Operating during U.S. business hours, this individual will play a vital role in reducing delivery risk, improving coordination across global teams, and ensuring program continuity.
Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate planning, dependency management, and stakeholder communications to improve overall delivery predictability.
  • Execute production releases, validate service health after deployment, and maintain tested rollback procedures and release runbooks.
  • Configure and operate database instances, including container creation, index maintenance, resource allocation, and data copying.
  • Build and maintain continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines to automate testing, artifact management, and environment promotion.
  • Configure containerized deployments, services, ingress, health probes, resource requests, and environment-specific application settings.
  • Configure secure API connectivity, load balancing, private endpoints, and integration with API management solutions.
  • Implement least-privilege access, managed identities, role-based access control, and secure secrets management.
  • Integrate automated tests, container image scanning, security checks, and approval gates into deployment pipelines.
  • Troubleshoot failed deployments, networking issues, authentication challenges, and API performance problems in collaboration with operations teams.
  • Partner with Agile program management offices and delivery leadership to support program execution, operational excellence, and governance.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline is preferred.
Experience: Demonstrated hands-on engineering experience in cloud infrastructure provisioning, containerization, and release management within complex delivery programs.
Technical Skills: Practical proficiency with Azure infrastructure, AKS, Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform, and YAML-based pipelines in Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions. Strong understanding of Linux, HTTP/REST APIs, DNS, TLS, ingress, load balancing, and scripting languages such as PowerShell, Bash, or Python.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Relevant cloud administration, DevOps, or Kubernetes professional certifications.
  • Experience supporting enterprise API, integration, or data platforms within regulated environments.
  • Familiarity with GitOps tools, progressive deployment strategies, and monitoring solutions like Prometheus or Grafana.
  • Knowledge of private networking, workload identity, and disaster recovery planning.
