Job Description

Job Description

Position Summary

Seeking a senior systems administrator on a temporary contract basis to support the data center engineering team through an in-flight infrastructure integration. This is a hands-on operations role: you will work directly with data center engineering to remediate findings across the existing estate and to build out and configure the compute, storage, and network capacity that the integration workstreams require.

The environment is a multi-tenant platform administering consumer-directed healthcare benefit accounts (HSA, FSA, HRA) and the associated card-based payments. The environment is genuinely hybrid: Microsoft Azure for cloud workloads and VMware-based infrastructure in co-located data centers, with identity spanning Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, and on-premises Active Directory. It handles PHI, PII, and cardholder data, and is assessed against the HIPAA Security Rule, SOC 2 Type II, HITRUST CSF, and PCI DSS. The role requires deep hands-on systems administration experience paired with the discipline to work inside a controlled change environment.

Key Responsibilities

•      Infrastructure remediation. Remediate findings across the co-located VMware estate — configuration drift, hardening baselines, patch and firmware currency, and end-of-life lifecycle items.

•      Integration build-out. Provision and configure compute, storage, and network capacity to support the integration workstreams, including VM builds, resource pool and datastore allocation, and template and image standardization.

•      Systems administration. Day-to-day administration of Windows Server and Linux (RHEL / Ubuntu) systems — patching, Group Policy, hardening baselines, monitoring agent coverage, and backup verification.

•      Change control and documentation. Execute all work through the established change management process, maintain runbooks and configuration documentation, and produce the evidence required for SOC 2, HITRUST, HIPAA, and PCI DSS assessment.

•      Maintenance windows. Plan and execute changes during scheduled maintenance windows, including occasional off-hours work, with tested rollback plans.

Required Qualifications

•      Experience. 8+ years of hands-on systems administration in enterprise data center environments, including at least 3 years supporting regulated healthcare, health payments, or financial services infrastructure.

•      VMware (required). Deep operational experience with vSphere and vCenter — cluster and host administration, DRS and HA, vMotion, datastore and resource management, and patching or upgrades via Lifecycle Manager. Candidates whose virtualization experience is exclusively cloud-based are not a fit for this engagement.

•      Windows Server. Windows Server administration at scale — Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS and DHCP, certificate services, and Windows patch management.

•      Linux. RHEL and/or Ubuntu administration — package and patch management, system, storage and filesystem management, and shell scripting.

•      Storage, backup, and network. SAN and NAS administration, backup and restore operations with tested recovery, and working command of data center networking fundamentals including VLANs, routing, firewall rules, and load balancing.

•      Regulated environment discipline. Comfortable operating under formal change management, with the documentation and evidence habits that audited environments require.

•      Communication. Able to write clear runbooks and configuration documentation, and to hand work off cleanly to the permanent team at the end of the engagement.

Preferred Qualifications

•      Experience with Azure IaaS and hybrid connectivity — ExpressRoute or site-to-site VPN.

•      Automation experience with PowerShell or Ansible, for infrastructure configuration and drift control.

•      Familiarity with CIS Benchmarks or DISA STIGs as hardening references.

•      VMware VCP, Microsoft Windows Server, or Red Hat (RHCSA / RHCE) certification.

•      Experience supporting a data center estate through an infrastructure integration, consolidation, or migration.
