Job Description

Field Service Engineer / Maintenance Technician | Watford | Full Time | £33,000–£37,000 per annum + Company Van

Hours: Full Time – 48 hours per week (40 hours on site 8 hours travel)

Do you enjoy solving practical problems, working hands-on and seeing a job through from inspection to completion?

Our client specialises in the inspection, maintenance, repair and installation of sports, gymnasium and fixed equipment for schools, leisure facilities, MOD sites and other organisations across the UK.

This is a varied field-based role where no two days are the same. You could be carrying out equipment inspections, completing repairs, installations or larger remedial works, working independently or alongside other engineers.

We are looking for someone based in or around Watford / West London, with a strong practical background, good problem-solving skills and the ability to work confidently on customer sites.

The Role

As a Field Service Engineer / Maintenance Technician, you will be responsible for carrying out inspections, maintenance, repairs and installation works at customer sites, ensuring all work is completed safely, professionally and to a high standard.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out inspections, maintenance, repairs and installation works in accordance with company standards and Health and Safety regulations
  • Identify defects and appropriate remedial measures, looking for repair options rather than replacement where possible
  • Produce accurate and detailed site reports, including findings, work completed, recommendations and quotes
  • Provide measurements, drawings, photographs, supplier part numbers and prices to support accurate quotations
  • Identify and obtain the parts, equipment and tools required for each job
  • Read job paperwork and RAMS before attending site to ensure the work, tools, parts, PPE and safe working methods are understood
  • Carry out vehicle checks and plan journeys to ensure punctual arrival at customer sites
  • Notify the office promptly of any overruns, delays, access issues or aborted visits
  • Complete job paperwork and reports and return them to the office within 24 hours
  • Maintain the company vehicle, tools, PPE and vehicle stock in accordance with company standards
  • Complete timesheets, vehicle checks, PPE, clothing, tools and stock checks as required
  • Complete Health and Safety training, toolbox talks and company training as required
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and organised vehicle and report any defects
  • Collaborate with colleagues and assist with the instruction and training of new engineers
  • Support colleagues and supervise on-site works where required

Working Hours & Travel

This is a 48-hour working week, consisting of:

  • 40 hours of site/work time
  • 8 hours of travel time per week
  • Engineers are expected to be on site and ready to start work at 8:00am, so early starts will form part of the role depending on the location of the site.
  • The role involves regular travel throughout London, the South East and across the UK, along with travel to the Manchester base when required.
  • Overnight stays away from home are required as part of the role, typically around 2–5 nights per month.
  • Applicants should therefore be comfortable with:
  • Regular driving
  • Early starts
  • Travelling throughout the UK
  • Staying away from home when required
  • Driving to Manchester when necessary

Requirements

Essential

  • Practical experience in an inspection, reporting, maintenance, fitting or installation role
  • Experience using hand and power tools
  • Experience working at height of up to 30ft using ladders and towers
  • Strong practical problem-solving and fault-finding skills
  • Ability to identify sensible repair solutions rather than automatically replacing equipment
  • Good technical competence and attention to detail, with the ability to understand parts diagrams
  • Excellent customer service and organisational skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative, as well as working effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to produce clear and accurate reports
  • Full clean UK driving licence
  • Good working knowledge of Word, Excel, PDF and iPad iOS
  • DBS check
  • Necessary permits to work in the UK

Desirable

  • Experience using floor sanders/buffers
  • Experience with arc welding
  • PASMA certificate
  • Experience supervising on-site works
  • Experience assisting with the training or instruction of new engineers

What's In It For You

  • £33,000–£37,000 per annum
  • Company van
  • Standard pension
  • 28 days' holiday
  • Monday to Friday working
  • 40 hours of site/work time + 8 hours of travel time per week
  • Varied work across a wide range of customer sites
  • Opportunity to develop specialist skills
  • Training and development within the sports and gymnasium equipment industry

We are looking for someone who takes pride in their work, is reliable, thinks ahead and enjoys finding solutions to practical problems. If you are a hands-on engineer looking for a varied field-based role and the opportunity to develop specialist skills, we would like to hear from you.
