Job description

As a Mechanical Integrity Engineer, you will assess whether critical gas turbine components can operate safely and reliably throughout their intended service life. You will carry out detailed stress, thermal and dynamic analysis of components including turbine blades, vanes, rotors and casings, supporting both new product development and upgrades to existing turbine designs.

Based in Lincoln, you will join the Turbine Engineering function and work closely with Mechanical Design, Heat Transfer, Materials and test teams. You will use engineering analysis, test data and operational experience from the global fleet to understand component behaviour in demanding high-temperature operating conditions.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Perform static, transient, linear and non-linear thermal and thermomechanical finite element analysis of gas turbine components, including blades, vanes, rotors and casings.
  • Complete static and dynamic stress analysis, producing component life assessments for high-cycle fatigue, low-cycle fatigue, thermo-mechanical fatigue and creep. Partner with Mechanical Design and Heat Transfer teams to establish component life against operating duty cycles and required life targets.
  • Support new product and upgrade programmes by analysing and adapting component designs, using root cause analysis, weighted decision analysis and design of experiments where needed.
  • Define component and engine test requirements, then calibrate structural models using engine test data and operational fleet experience.
  • Produce technical reports, presentations and method documents, while supporting analysis tool-chain improvements, software validation and the development of more effective engineering methods.

What You Bring

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with significant mechanical or structural design content, ideally in aerospace, automotive, power generation turbomachinery or materials science, or equivalent verified vocational experience.
  • At least two years’ professional experience in finite element stress analysis and component life calculation.
  • A sound understanding of stress theory, material behaviour and high-temperature failure mechanisms under cyclic and steady operating conditions.
  • Knowledge of component stress analysis, dynamic analysis and lifing methods, including fatigue and creep assessment.
  • Experience using finite element analysis and pre- and post-processing software, ideally Abaqus. Experience with ANSYS, NX Simcenter, Nastran or RR SC03 would also be relevant.
  • The ability to validate and challenge analysis results using simplified one-dimensional methods and hand calculations, alongside effective communication skills for multidisciplinary working.

About the Team

Our Gas Services division offers low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. We bring together gas turbines, steam turbines, generators and digital service solutions under one roof. Through modernization, digitalization and innovative service offerings, we support customers worldwide in improving reliability, efficiency and sustainability.

You will join the Turbine Engineering function in Lincoln, supporting the structural integrity and durability of gas turbine components throughout product development, upgrades and operational life. The team brings together mechanical design, heat transfer, materials, testing and fleet experience to understand how turbine parts behave in high-temperature service and ensure they achieve the required safety, reliability and lifespan.
