Engineering Intern – Worthington Steel

Starting Pay: $22.00/hour
Schedule: Ideally 40 hours per week

Ready to Take Engineering Beyond the Classroom?

Ever wonder how engineering concepts turn into real-world results? At Worthington Steel, you won't just be watching from the sidelines. You'll get hands-on experience, tackle real manufacturing challenges, and see your ideas come to life!

Worthington Steel is a global metals manufacturer serving industries like automotive, construction, energy, agriculture, and more. Here at our Rome, NY facility, we specialize in producing tight-tolerance steel coils used primarily in the automotive industry.

Pretty cool, right? Here's what makes it even better.

We believe great things happen when people work together. Our culture is built around the Golden Rule—treating others the way we'd want to be treated. We're big on teamwork, learning, and giving people opportunities to grow.

The Perks (Because Internships Should Have Those Too!)

  • $22/hour – Get paid while gaining valuable engineering experience.
  • $180 Boot Allowance – We've got your work boots covered!
  • Free Coffee & Hot Drinks – Because some mornings require a little extra caffeine.
  • On-Site Barbershop – Yes, really. Get a haircut without leaving work!
  • On-Site Fitness Center – Get a workout in before or after your shift.
  • Real-World Experience – Work alongside experienced engineers and maintenance professionals on projects that actually make a difference.

What Will You Actually Be Doing?

This isn't an internship where you'll spend your days making copies or grabbing coffee.

You'll work directly with our Maintenance Manager, Engineering team, and other leaders throughout the facility to solve problems, improve equipment, and help keep our manufacturing operations running smoothly.

You'll have opportunities to explore different areas of engineering, including:

  • Mechanical Engineering – Learn how our equipment works and help improve its performance.
  • Electrical & Controls Engineering – Get exposure to the systems that power and control our operations.
  • Process Engineering – Find smarter, more efficient ways to manufacture steel.
  • Reliability Engineering – Help prevent equipment failures and reduce downtime.

You'll be part of real projects, working with real equipment, in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Some Projects You Might Get Your Hands On

  • Machine Guarding Assessments – Help make our equipment and work environment safer.
  • Capital Projects (CARs) – Assist with planning, designing, and budgeting equipment improvements.
  • Machine Moves & Layout Improvements – Help coordinate equipment moves and improve production flow.
  • Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis – Investigate equipment breakdowns and help develop solutions to prevent them from happening again.
  • Continuous Improvement – Identify opportunities to improve quality, productivity, and equipment reliability.

What We're Looking For

You don't need to know everything. That's what an internship is for! We're looking for someone who's curious, motivated, and excited to learn.

Our ideal candidate:

  • Has completed at least two years of college toward an Engineering or related degree at an accredited college or university.
  • Is studying Mechanical, Electrical, Process, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Enjoys solving problems and figuring out how things work.
  • Has some familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, 3D modeling, or GD&T.
  • Can work independently but also enjoys being part of a team.
  • Is comfortable in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
  • Isn't afraid to ask questions, share ideas, or jump into a new challenge.

Military experience? We encourage you to apply! Technical training, mechanical aptitude, and problem-solving experience can translate well into this role.

Why Worthington Steel?

Because we want you to leave this internship with more than another line on your résumé.

We want you to gain real experience, build meaningful connections, develop your technical skills, and discover what a career in manufacturing engineering can look like.

Whether you're still working toward your degree or preparing to launch your career, this is your opportunity to learn from experienced professionals while making a real impact.
