Multi-Asset Portfolio Specialist

Location: Chicago, IL
Team: Multi-Asset Investments / Asset Allocation
Reports to: Director, Multi-Asset Investments

Position Summary

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Multi-Asset Portfolio Specialist to join our Multi-Asset Investments team. This individual will serve as a critical link between our investment professionals, clients, and distribution partners, helping articulate our investment philosophy, portfolio positioning, market views, and portfolio construction capabilities.

The Portfolio Specialist will work closely with portfolio managers, research analysts, product teams, and client-facing professionals to communicate investment strategies, support business development efforts, and enhance the client experience. The successful candidate will possess strong investment knowledge across public and private markets, exceptional communication skills, and a passion for helping clients solve complex portfolio challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Investment Strategy & Portfolio Expertise
  • Develop deep expertise across the firm's multi-asset investment capabilities, including strategic asset allocation, tactical asset allocation, portfolio construction, ETF model portfolios, and risk management.
  • Partner with portfolio managers and research teams to understand and communicate investment decisions, portfolio positioning, and performance outcomes.
  • Translate complex investment concepts into compelling and accessible client narratives.
  • Participate in investment committee discussions, portfolio reviews, and market outlook conversations.
Client & Prospect Engagement
  • Present portfolio positioning, market outlooks, performance attribution, and investment process to institutional and wealth clients.
  • Support requests for proposals (RFPs), due diligence questionnaires (DDQs), and client inquiries.
  • Work closely with relationship managers and sales teams to identify opportunities and strengthen client relationships.
Thought Leadership & Content Development
  • Develop client-facing investment commentary, market insights, white papers, presentation materials, and portfolio updates.
  • Contribute to investment thought leadership across asset allocation, macroeconomics, portfolio construction, and market developments.
  • Help shape messaging around evolving investment themes and strategic initiatives.
Product & Business Strategy
  • Provide feedback on product development and competitive positioning based on client interactions and market trends.
  • Support product launches and enhancements by developing investment narratives and client communication materials.
  • Monitor industry developments, asset allocation trends, and competitor offerings.
Portfolio Analytics & Reporting
  • Analyze portfolio performance, attribution, risk exposures, and implementation outcomes.
  • Support development of portfolio analytics and reporting materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Assist in the preparation of investment committee presentations and executive-level reporting.
Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Mathematics, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in asset management, multi-asset investing, portfolio management, research, or portfolio specialist/client portfolio management roles.
  • Strong understanding of capital markets, asset allocation, portfolio construction, and investment management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present to sophisticated investors.
  • Strong analytical capabilities and ability to interpret portfolio and market data.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across investment, product, and distribution teams.
Preferred
  • CFA designation or progress toward CFA Charter.
  • Experience working with institutional investors, pension plans, endowments, foundations, family offices, or wealth management platforms.
  • Knowledge of alternative investments, including private equity, private credit, and real assets.
  • Experience supporting model portfolios, multi-asset, target date, OCIO, or outsourced investment solutions.
Salary Range:
$137,400 - 233,600 USD

Salary range is a good faith estimate of base pay. Northern Trust provides a comprehensive benefits package including retirement benefits (401k and pension), health and welfare benefits (medical, dental, vision, spending accounts and disability), paid time off, parental and caregiver leave, life & accident insurance, and other voluntary and well-being benefits. Northern Trust also provides a discretionary bonus program that may include an equity component.
