Boston Children's Hospital seeks an ECMO Specialist to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team. In this role, you will operate and monitor ECMO circuits for critically ill pediatric patients, collaborating closely with physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists. Responsibilities include patient assessment, equipment management, documentation, and adherence to safety and quality standards. You'll work in state-of-the-art facilities, contribute to innovative care and research, and support our mission-driven focus on exceptional outcomes, patient safety, and continuous improvement in pediatric healthcare.
Responsibilities
- Set up, prime, initiate, and operate ECMO circuits for neonatal, pediatric, and select young adult patients.
- Continuously monitor and adjust ECMO settings (flows, sweep gas, anticoagulation) under established protocols and physician direction.
- Recognize and respond to ECMO-related complications, alarms, and emergent situations, coordinating rapid interventions with the care team.
- Document circuit parameters, patient response, and interventions accurately and in a timely manner in the medical record.
- Collaborate with intensivists, cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, perfusionists, nurses, and respiratory therapists during daily rounds and care planning.
- Support cannulation and decannulation procedures and manage patient transport on ECMO within the hospital as needed.
- Adhere to infection prevention, anticoagulation, and safety protocols, contributing to program quality and risk reduction.
- Participate in ECMO quality improvement projects, data collection, and program audits, and support research initiatives where applicable.
- Educate and mentor nursing, respiratory therapy, and trainee staff on ECMO equipment, troubleshooting, and emergency procedures.
- Engage families with clear, compassionate communication within scope, supporting Boston Children's mission of family-centered care.
Required Skills
- ECMO circuit setup, priming, and operation
- Hemodynamic and respiratory physiology interpretation
- Ventilator management in ECMO-supported patients
- Anticoagulation monitoring and adjustment (e.g., ACT, anti-Xa) per protocol
- Troubleshooting ECMO alarms and mechanical issues
- Management of oxygenators, pumps, and related devices
- Critical care monitoring and documentation (arterial lines, central lines, invasive monitoring)
- Pediatric and neonatal intensive care skills
- Emergency response in high-acuity settings (code situations, rapid decompensation)
- Interdisciplinary communication and teamwork
- Use of electronic medical records and ICU monitoring systems
- Infection control and sterile technique
- Education and training of clinical staff on ECMO processes
