Senior Microsoft SQL Developer

Position Summary

VDOT is seeking a Senior Microsoft SQL Developer / Microservices Technical Lead to support a tolling modernization program. This role requires strong hands-on experience with SQL Server, .NET/C#, Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory, and database modernization, along with technical leadership experience.

The consultant will work closely with the PM/Scrum Master, SMEs, developers, QA, DevOps, Cloud, and other stakeholders to help decompose a monolithic database into microservice-aligned schemas and support application modernization.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead technical design discussions for microservices, database restructuring, and API integrations.
• Perform hands-on SQL development including:
• Schema modernization
• Stored procedures
• Views
• Indexing
• Query optimization
• Performance tuning
• Support .NET/C# backend and API development as needed.
• Guide engineering teams and provide technical leadership.
• Work closely with SMEs and project leadership on architecture and delivery decisions.
• Build migration logic and ETL pipelines using Azure Data Factory (ADF).
• Align SQL modernization efforts with microservice boundaries and migration timelines.
• Participate in code reviews and technical documentation reviews.
• Collaborate across SQL, .NET, BA, QA, DevOps, Cloud, and CAB teams.
• Support compliance requirements including PCI, data retention, audit, and secure data handling.
• Participate in Agile delivery activities and support project execution.

Required Qualifications

• 10+ years of overall IT experience.
• 7+ years of Microsoft SQL Server development experience.
• 5+ years of .NET / C# backend development experience.
• 3–5 years of technical lead experience.
• 3+ years of modernization or migration project experience.
• 3+ years of experience with Azure SQL in IaaS VM environments.
• 3+ years of experience building Azure Data Factory (ADF) pipelines and supporting ETL workloads.
• 3+ years of experience working with Agile delivery teams.
• Strong experience with SQL performance tuning, schema design, stored procedures, views, indexing, and data migration.
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years of state government or transportation industry experience.
• 2+ years working in regulated or audited environments.
• 2+ years of exposure to microservices architecture.
• Experience with PCI or other compliance-driven environments.
