Job Summary: The Business Intelligence Analyst (BIA) supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the School of Medicine's (SOM) internal controls program to strengthen governance, accountability, and data integrity across key functional areas, including Finance, Human Resources, Research Administration, and Clinical Trials.
This role applies analytical, technical, and process improvement skills to evaluate business processes, document workflows and control points, perform control testing, and develop data-driven monitoring solutions that promote accuracy, consistency, and operational efficiency.
The Business Intelligence Analyst partners closely with the Senior Business Intelligence Analyst - Controls, Business Intelligence team members, business process owners, and administrative stakeholders to analyze existing processes, identify risks and inefficiencies, and recommend improvements that strengthen internal controls and streamline operations. The position leverages SQL, data analytics, process modeling, and reporting tools to validate data, investigate discrepancies, document findings, and monitor corrective actions.
Through collaboration and continuous improvement, this role helps advance a culture of transparency, accountability, and trusted data across the School of Medicine.
Internal Controls Program Support: Support the development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of the school-wide Internal Controls Program. Assist with documenting control frameworks, policies, procedures, ownership structures, and monitoring activities across finance, research administration, HR, and clinical trial operations. Coordinate with business partners to gather information, assess existing processes, identify potential control gaps, and support the implementation of improvements. Contribute to the use of automation and AI, where appropriate, to improve control monitoring and operational efficiency.
Process Modeling & Improvement: Document and model business processes, workflows, and control points across finance, research administration, HR, and clinical trial operations to improve process visibility, consistency, and accountability. Analyze existing processes to identify inefficiencies, redundant activities, control gaps, bottlenecks, and opportunities for standardization or automation. Collaborate with business process owners and the Senior BIA - Controls to develop recommendations, document future-state processes, and support implementation of process improvements. Evaluate the effectiveness of implemented changes to ensure they strengthen internal controls, improve data integrity, and reduce administrative burden.
Communication & Relationships: Collaborate with the Senior Business Intelligence Analyst - Controls, Business Intelligence team members, SOM administrative managers, business process owners, IT, and campus partners to support consistent application of internal control practices. Communicate findings, test results, and identify issues clearly through documentation, reports, presentations, and stakeholder discussions. Build productive working relationships that promote accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.
Dashboard & Scorecard Development: Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and monitoring tools to evaluate control performance, identify anomalies, and track remediation activities. Use available reporting and analytics platforms to monitor key control indicators, highlight trends, and provide visibility into potential risks. Partner with the Senior BIA - Controls and other analytics team members to ensure reporting is accurate, reliable, and aligned with program objectives.
SQL & Database Proficiency with Data Integrity Focus: Use SQL and other analytical tools to extract, analyze, and validate data across enterprise systems and reporting platforms. Develop and execute data reconciliation, completeness, accuracy, and consistency checks to identify discrepancies between source systems and published reports. Document validation procedures, investigate exceptions, and collaborate with system owners and IT to resolve data quality issues. Support assessments of data flows, access controls, and system changes to strengthen data integrity and reliability.
Financial & Healthcare Analytics: Apply knowledge of financial, administrative, and operational processes to support control assessments and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce risk. Analyze data across finance, research administration, HR, and clinical trial functions to identify unusual activity, inconsistencies, emerging trends, and potential control deficiencies. Translate analytical findings into actionable insights and recommendations for the Senior BIA - Controls and relevant business partners.
Controls Testing, Documentation & Accuracy: Execute assigned control testing and monitoring procedures to assess compliance with established policies, procedures, and control requirements. Maintain clear documentation of testing methodologies, evidence, results, exceptions, and recommended corrective actions. Assist with investigating discrepancies, evaluating supporting documentation, and monitoring remediation efforts to ensure issues are addressed appropriately and timely. Apply consistent quality assurance practices to promote accurate, complete, and reliable results.
Project Management & Initiative: Coordinate and execute assigned projects and control-related initiatives, maintain organized work plans, documentation, timelines, and status updates. Manage multiple priorities while communicating progress, risks, and potential delays proactively.
