System Admin

We are seeking a versatile System Administrator 4 to support the Transportation Operations Center (TOC) for a state transportation agency in Staunton, VA. This fully on-site role provides end-to-end IT infrastructure support spanning Tier 1 through Tier 3 requests. The administrator will provision, configure, and maintain Linux (Red Hat) and Windows servers, manage VMware virtualization, execute backup/recovery operations, administer Active Directory, and support GIS and Asset Management application infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Server Provisioning & Administration: Install, rebuild, configure, and maintain Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Windows Server operating systems, directory services, storage, and server hardware.

Tier 1–3 End-User & Operations Support: Respond to break/fix issues, deploy desktop/laptop systems, manage peripherals, and resolve user connectivity errors for TOC operations.

Virtualization & Backup Operations: Administer VMware virtual environments; perform daily backups, system log analyses, file archiving, and recovery verification.

Active Directory & Identity Management: Manage user account provisioning, group policies, access controls, and security permissions per request.

Cybersecurity & Threat Mitigation: Support security controls, threat hunting, vulnerability patching, intrusion detection monitoring, and change management logs.

Application & GIS Infrastructure Support: Configure and upgrade system software supporting GIS infrastructure, Asset Management applications, and Video Management Systems (VMS).

System Monitoring & Optimization: Track system performance metrics, perform resource tuning, execute OS patches, and maintain up-to-date inventory and architecture documentation.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Red Hat Linux & Windows Server Deployment: 5+ years configuring, deploying, and maintaining Linux (RHEL) and Windows Server OS environments.

Hardware Administration: 5+ years supporting desktop, laptop, server hardware, and peripherals.

Active Directory Administration: 5+ years managing user accounts, permissions, and Active Directory objects.

VMware & Virtualization: 5+ years administering virtualized infrastructure using VMware.

Backup & Disaster Recovery: 5+ years executing backup routines, data archival, and disaster recovery procedures.

Multi-Tier Support & Customer Service: 5+ years providing Tier 1–3 helpdesk support and direct customer service.

Preferred & Desired Qualifications

Cybersecurity & Threat Mitigation: 2+ years supporting cybersecurity controls, security monitoring, and threat hunting.

Hands-On Network Support: 3+ years managing and troubleshooting network equipment (switches, routers, firewalls).

Video Management Systems (VMS): 2+ years supporting VMS platforms or traffic management visual displays.

Certifications / Special Skills: Microsoft Certifications (MCSA/MCSE/Azure), Red Hat Certifications (RHCSA/RHCE), or Audio-Video (AV) support experience in a control center setting
