Health & Safety Coordinator
Location: Various Mining Projects & Winter Ice Road Operations
Employment Type: Full-Time / Project-Based

About the Opportunity

Matrix is seeking a dedicated and safety-focused Health & Safety Coordinator to support various mining and industrial projects, including winter ice road construction and maintenance operations.

This position is well suited to a proactive safety professional who is comfortable working in remote locations, staying in camp accommodations, and performing field duties in extreme winter conditions and frigid temperatures.

The successful candidate will work closely with project managers, supervisors, workers, and subcontractors to promote a strong safety culture, ensure regulatory compliance, and help maintain safe working conditions across all project activities.

Key Responsibilities

Implement and monitor site-specific health and safety programs across multiple mining and winter road projects.

Conduct regular site inspections, hazard assessments, and safety audits.

Support the development and review of Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs), Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs), safe work procedures, and emergency response plans.

Ensure compliance with applicable occupational health and safety legislation, company policies, and client requirements.

Lead and participate in toolbox talks, safety orientations, and daily safety meetings.

Monitor winter ice road construction, maintenance, heavy equipment operations, and vehicle safety.

Identify and address cold-weather hazards, including frostbite, hypothermia, cold stress, reduced visibility, and changing ice and road conditions.

Promote safe work practices for personnel operating in remote locations and extreme temperatures.

Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions, and follow up on corrective actions.

Maintain accurate safety documentation, inspection reports, training records, and incident statistics.

Work collaboratively with site management, subcontractors, and field personnel to address safety concerns and improve performance.

Support emergency preparedness and ensure workers understand applicable emergency response procedures.

Qualifications & Experience

Occupational Health and Safety certification or relevant post-secondary education is preferred.

Previous experience in a Health & Safety Coordinator or Advisor role, preferably in mining, heavy civil construction, industrial operations, or remote projects.

Experience with winter ice roads, northern construction, heavy equipment, or remote camp operations is considered an asset.

Knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation and client safety requirements.

Current First Aid/CPR certification, as required by the project.

Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently in the field and communicate effectively with workers and management.

Valid driver's licence and ability to travel to remote project locations.

Work Environment & Conditions

Work at various mining, industrial, and winter ice road project sites.

Remote camp accommodations provided while working at designated project locations, subject to project arrangements.

Work outdoors in frigid temperatures, potentially extreme sub-zero conditions, and changing winter weather.

Exposure to snow, ice, wind chill, and challenging northern operating environments.

Work around heavy equipment, construction activities, and active winter road operations.

Flexibility to work project-specific rotations, extended shifts, and weekends as operational requirements dictate.

Ability to follow cold-weather safety procedures and wear appropriate winter personal protective equipment.

Candidates must be prepared for the physical and environmental demands of remote work in northern winter conditions.

What Matrix Offers

Competitive compensation based on experience and qualifications.

The opportunity to contribute to diverse mining, industrial, and winter ice road projects.

A team environment committed to safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
