Job description

FEA Simulation Engineer – Structural Analysis

Location: Novi, MI (Onsite preferred, flexibility for 1 day/week remote; remote flexibility for qualified candidates)
Employment Type: 6-Month Contract-to-Hire (Potential for Extension/Conversion)
Industry: Battery Technology / Energy Storage

About the Opportunity

Our client is an innovative battery technology company developing advanced energy storage solutions for automotive and other high-performance applications. They are looking for an FEA Simulation Engineer to join their growing engineering team and support structural analysis, simulation, and validation of battery pack assemblies.

This is a highly hands-on role focused on understanding how battery systems perform under real-world conditions, particularly vibration, shock, and structural loading. The engineer will work closely with an experienced simulation team member, gaining familiarity with existing processes before taking ownership of independent analysis projects.

The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in structural FEA, particularly vibration analysis, and enjoys working across different engineering challenges. Previous battery experience is not required; candidates from automotive, aerospace, and other industries involving structural simulation are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform structural finite element analysis (FEA) on battery pack assemblies, components, and supporting structures.
  • Conduct vibration analysis, including modal, frequency response, and other relevant dynamic simulations.
  • Support static structural and mechanical shock analysis to evaluate structural integrity and performance.
  • Build, run, and interpret simulation models to identify potential design weaknesses and recommend improvements.
  • Correlate simulation results with physical test data to improve model accuracy and validate engineering designs.
  • Collaborate with mechanical design, testing, and validation engineers to troubleshoot issues and support product development.
  • Utilize simulation tools such as OptiStruct, HyperWorks, and other FEA software.
  • Support multiple engineering projects with changing priorities and gradually take ownership of simulation activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline OR approximately 2+ years of hands-on structural FEA experience in an industrial or academic environment.
  • Strong understanding of structural mechanics, finite element methods, and vibration analysis.
  • Experience developing, running, and interpreting structural simulation models.
  • Experience with OptiStruct, HyperWorks, ANSYS, Abaqus, or comparable FEA tools, with OptiStruct strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of linear and nonlinear structural analysis.
  • Ability to interpret simulation results and communicate findings to cross-functional engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent professional FEA experience.
  • Direct experience with Altair OptiStruct and HyperWorks.
  • Experience performing vibration, modal, frequency response, or dynamic structural analysis.
  • Exposure to mechanical shock, fatigue, or durability simulations.
  • Experience correlating FEA predictions with physical testing and instrumentation measurements.
  • Familiarity with LS-DYNA.
  • Experience analyzing larger structural assemblies or complex mechanical systems.
  • Background in automotive, aerospace, battery systems, energy storage, or related industries.

Why This Opportunity?

  • Work on advanced battery technology and next-generation energy storage systems.
  • Join a growing engineering team with a direct impact on product development and validation.
  • Gain exposure to full battery pack assemblies and a variety of structural engineering challenges.
  • Collaborate closely with experienced engineers while taking on increasing technical responsibility.
  • Opportunity for long-term growth through a contract-to-hire arrangement.
