Job description

This Manager (M2) position serves as the Manager of Technical Writing, leading the team that develops and maintains procedures, work instructions, reference materials, and related guidance supporting data center operations.

The manager translates approved documentation priorities into team work plans, balances writer capacity, and ensures consistent editorial quality and timely delivery. The role coordinates research, technical review, approval, and publication with subject-matter experts and accountable operational owners. Writers research and communicate technical information, while qualified technical owners validate the underlying requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the technical writing team’s delivery of assigned documentation priorities. Define scope, intended audience, success criteria, milestones, deliverables, and acceptance criteria with documentation and operational owners.

  • Build and maintain team work plans, assignments, capacity estimates, and reporting cadences across concurrent documentation efforts. Make priority tradeoffs and the impact of new requests visible.

  • Apply established documentation standards, templates, terminology, editorial practices, and review processes to improve consistency, quality, and accountability.

  • Ensure writers research existing procedures, equipment manuals, and approved technical references before escalating unanswered questions. Maintain traceability between documented instructions and supporting sources.

  • Coordinate work with operations, engineering, facilities, and other subject-matter experts to obtain required inputs and reviews. Ensure technical questions, conflicting instructions, and unsupported values are resolved by qualified technical owners before publication.

  • Review documents for clarity, completeness, sequence, consistency, and usability. Ensure prerequisites, responsibilities, references, and applicable safety information are included and validated by the appropriate reviewers.

  • Coordinate document approval, version control, publication, revision history, and retirement through established document-control processes. Ensure users can identify and locate the current approved version.

  • Identify dependencies, delivery risks, overdue reviews, and missing inputs. Develop practical mitigation plans, track actions to closure, and escalate decisions beyond the team’s authority with options and a recommendation.

  • Review documentation needs with operational and procedure owners when equipment, processes, or operating standards change. Coordinate revisions and communicate changes to affected stakeholders.

  • Coach and develop writers through clear goals, regular feedback, editorial reviews, and development plans. Evaluate progress and provide input into hiring, performance, and promotion decisions.

  • Track and report documentation delivery, backlog age, review turnaround, rework, and user feedback. Use findings and lessons learned to improve team processes and documentation quality.

Preferred Background

  • Substantial experience in technical writing, operational documentation, procedure development, or a closely related discipline.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and edit clear procedural content for readers performing complex technical or operational work.

  • Experience managing documentation through research, drafting, technical review, approval, publication, and revision.

  • Strong editorial judgment, including identifying missing steps, inconsistent terminology, ambiguous instructions, and gaps in supporting evidence.

  • Experience coordinating subject-matter experts and operational owners to resolve technical questions and review delays while preserving clear approval responsibilities.

  • Experience documenting data center operations, facilities systems, maintenance activities, or other complex operational processes; familiarity with standard operating procedures, methods of procedure, and preventive maintenance instructions.

  • Experience with SharePoint or another controlled document repository and tools for tracking assignments, reviews, and approvals.

  • Experience leading work through others, balancing assignments, reviewing deliverables, and coaching colleagues. Prior formal people-management experience is welcome but is not required.
