Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced AS400 / IBM i Developer & Administrator for a long-term contract engagement supporting a critical legacy IBM i environment.

The resource will be primarily responsible for AS400 application development and maintenance, RPG/CL programming, DB2 database management, application administration, troubleshooting, and system integrations.

The AS400 hardware, operating system, and underlying infrastructure are managed by an external hosting provider. Therefore, this role is not focused on hardware or OS-level administration. Instead, the consultant will work at the application and database level and coordinate with the external hosting provider when environment-level changes or infrastructure support are required.

The role will also support legacy application documentation, data extraction/archiving, and modernization/cloud migration initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

1. AS400 Application Development & Support

  • Develop, maintain, modify, and troubleshoot legacy applications running on IBM i / AS400.
  • Work extensively with RPG III, RPG IV / ILE RPG, RPGLE, CL and SQL.
  • Investigate application defects, batch processing issues, and production problems.
  • Modify existing application logic based on changing business, regulatory, and operational requirements.
  • Provide ongoing production support and application maintenance.

2. IBM i Application Administration

  • Perform application-level administration within the IBM i environment.
  • Manage user profiles, object-level authorities, and application security.
  • Review and monitor system audit information, including QAUDJRN, where applicable.
  • Manage application-related job queues, subsystems, and job scheduling.
  • Coordinate with external hosting/infrastructure teams for system maintenance, patches, environmental changes, and other infrastructure-related activities.
