Senior Product Engineer

Avanti Recruitment is working with an established fintech business that is looking for a Senior Product Engineer to join its product and engineering team. This role is remote.

The company develops specialist software used by wealth managers, financial advisers and other financial institutions to assess investment risk, understand customer behaviour and deliver more personalised financial advice.

It's a relatively small business with an established customer base, and the engineering team is responsible for both maintaining existing enterprise products and developing the next generation of its platform.

This is a full-stack position with a strong backend focus, working predominantly with PHP/Laravel alongside React, AWS, Python and API-driven services.

The Role

The company is looking for an engineer who can take ownership of a problem rather than simply work through a predefined development ticket.

You'll work closely with the Head of Product and the wider technical team to understand business and customer requirements, consider the available approaches and design and build appropriate solutions.

Some projects will involve developing entirely new functionality, while others will focus on extending existing products or integrating with systems used by financial institutions.

There is a strong emphasis on delivering software through to production. The expectation is that engineers take responsibility for the full lifecycle, including technical design, development, testing, deployment and ongoing improvements.

The business is also actively adopting AI-assisted development tools across its engineering processes, including coding, testing and deployment.

Responsibilities

Design, develop and maintain product features using PHP, Laravel, React and AWS.

Build backend services, APIs and integrations across a cloud-based platform.

Work closely with Product to understand requirements, challenge assumptions and agree appropriate technical solutions.

Take ownership of development from initial design through to deployment and production support.

Contribute to architectural decisions and improvements across existing and new systems.

Work on both established enterprise software and newer product development initiatives.

Use AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering efficiency, testing and code quality.

Collaborate with colleagues across Product, Engineering and other areas of the business.

Technical requirements

PHP and Laravel experience is particularly important, as much of the company's existing application and service infrastructure is built using Laravel.

The ideal candidate will have:

Strong commercial experience developing applications using PHP and Laravel.

Experience designing and building APIs, backend services and integrations.

Full-stack development experience, ideally including React or another modern JavaScript framework.

Experience with AWS or comparable cloud environments.

An understanding of software architecture, distributed systems and modern development practices.

Experience taking responsibility for software throughout the development lifecycle.

An interest in AI-assisted software development and how these tools can be used effectively.

Experience with Python, microservices, financial services or regulated environments would be useful, although these are not essential requirements.

The Person

Alongside technical ability, the company places considerable importance on how its engineers approach problems.

They're looking for somebody who is comfortable working with requirements that aren't always fully defined, can ask the right questions and is confident recommending an appropriate approach.

Good communication skills are important, as you'll work closely with Product and occasionally contribute to discussions around customer requirements.

The team is small, so the role suits somebody who is proactive, comfortable making decisions and happy taking responsibility for delivering working software rather than just completing their individual development tasks.

Commercial awareness is also important. The business wants engineers who can balance technical quality with practical delivery timescales and the needs of its customers.

The Opportunity

This position offers the chance to work on a specialist product used within the financial services industry, with a combination of established systems and new platform development.

The engineering team has considerable input into how solutions are designed and delivered, and there is scope to influence both technical decisions and the way the company develops its products.

The business is also investing in AI-assisted engineering and wants developers who are interested in using these tools to improve how software is built.

You'll be working in a small team with direct access to senior technical and product colleagues, without the layers of management and process typically found in larger organisations.

Salary and working arrangements

Salary up to 90,000

Remote working across the UK

Occasional in-person team meetings, with no fixed weekly office requirement

Full-time, permanent position
