Overview

An opportunity for a Senior Hardware Systems Engineer to support the design, testing and issue resolution of hardware systems within a naval defence engineering environment.

Working within a small, dedicated hardware configuration team, you will help prepare Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) equipment for delivery directly to naval platforms. The role involves producing technical documentation, supporting hardware integration and environmental testing, resolving engineering issues and ensuring solutions meet relevant engineering processes and quality requirements.

You will work closely with technical authorities, engineering work package managers and quality assurance teams to deliver achievable hardware solutions that meet technical, safety, schedule and budget requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce technical documentation covering hardware design, interconnectivity and interfaces.
  • Develop procurement specifications, Bills of Materials (BoMs) and supporting installation documentation.
  • Support environmental testing activities, including Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) trials.
  • Investigate operational problems and engineering developments, identifying and implementing suitable solutions.
  • Evaluate hardware options and prepare technical reports with recommendations for problem resolution and engineering improvements.
  • Support hardware design decisions, working closely with the Combat Systems Hardware System Design Authority.
  • Collaborate with engineering work package managers to ensure technical solutions are achievable and delivered in line with project schedules and budgets.
  • Work with hardware technical authorities and quality assurance teams on technical, safety and delivery requirements throughout the engineering lifecycle.
  • Maintain configuration control and ensure appropriate engineering documentation and baselines are managed.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to less experienced team members.
  • Manage competing priorities across multiple concurrent engineering projects.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Understanding of the engineering lifecycle and lifecycle management (LCM).
  • Experience with Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware.
  • Experience producing hardware design, test, procurement or installation documentation.
  • Understanding of configuration control and engineering baselines.
  • Ability to investigate technical problems and develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to manage complex technical issues and balance priorities across multiple projects.
  • A degree in a technology, engineering or science-related discipline, or equivalent relevant qualifications where accepted by the employer.

Relevant Technical Experience

  • Experience in several of the following areas would be beneficial:
  • COTS hardware, particularly blade servers and PC-based technology.
  • COTS cabinets, cabinet design and hardware configuration.
  • Wiring schedules and power distribution.
  • Hardware design and electrical engineering.
  • Dell and Juniper hardware.
  • Naval platform installation.
  • Environmental testing and hardware acceptance processes.
  • Product safety and environmental requirements within engineering project plans.

The Team

  • You will join a small, dedicated and high-performing hardware configuration team responsible for preparing COTS equipment for delivery directly to naval platforms.
  • The role offers the opportunity to contribute to mission-critical naval systems, working across engineering teams and with external partners to support the Royal Navy's future Hybrid Navy vision.
