Assistant Controller – Construction Accounting

Position Overview

The Intersect Group is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to lead construction accounting operations and support the financial management of a diverse portfolio of development and construction projects. This role serves as a critical financial partner to project teams, lenders, ownership groups, and executive leadership, ensuring accurate reporting, regulatory compliance, and financial transparency throughout the project lifecycle.

The Assistant Controller will oversee all aspects of construction accounting, including draw administration, retainage management, HUD compliance, cost certifications, financial reporting, and project closeout activities. This individual will play a key leadership role in strengthening accounting processes, maintaining internal controls, and supporting the successful execution of complex construction and development projects while supervising and mentoring one accounting team member.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all construction accounting activities from project financing and closing through final completion and closeout.
  • Manage the full construction draw process, including preparation, submission, tracking, funding reconciliation, and lender coordination.
  • Review and administer retainage calculations, retainage releases, and retainage draw requests to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements along with supporting schedules and reporting packages.
  • Monitor project costs, job cost reports, budgets, commitments, change orders, and forecasts to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Coordinate with lenders, developers, contractors, consultants, auditors, and ownership groups regarding funding requirements and project financial performance.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, HUD regulations, lender requirements, internal controls, and audit standards.
  • Identify and implement process improvements while mentoring and developing accounting staff to enhance operational effectiveness.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant experience in construction accounting.
  • Proven experience managing the full construction draw process for lender-funded construction and development projects.
  • Strong knowledge of retainage accounting, construction funding structures, project closeouts, and cost certification reporting.
  • Experience working with HUD-financed projects and HUD compliance requirements.
  • Solid understanding of construction job costing, project accounting, budgeting, commitments, forecasting, and financial statement preparation.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards, with experience supporting audits and compliance activities.
  • Experience with construction accounting software and ERP systems preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to supervise, mentor, and develop accounting professionals.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
