Job Description

Job Title: Technical Program Manager

Locations:  Chicago (Riverwoods, IL) / McLean or Richmond, VA / Remote 

 As a role, TPMs:

  • Bring strong technical acumen and engineering experience to drive the strategy and execution of large-scale, technically complex, and cross-functional programs that align to Capital One’s business priorities.
  • This includes programs in specialized technical areas such as well-managed systems, cloud infrastructure, and engineering productivity.
  • Act as a delivery leader, partnering with engineers and product managers to help break down complexity and organizational silos, influence roadmaps, and identify and resolve dependencies.
  • Leverage technical acumen to actively engage in Design/Build conversations, assess and help make technical trade-offs, and connect dots across teams to drive successful outcomes.
  • Dive deep into system design and architecture, identifying patterns that impact product quality and building new systems/long-term solutions.
  • Ensure consistent flow of information and drive alignment with cross-functional stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Meeting the Core Competencies below
  • Experience in Financial Services / Payments / Credit Cards
  • Prior experience at Capital One or Discover Card a plus
  • Risk and compliance experience as it applies to Technology applications and engineering

Core Competencies:

Program Management

  • Manage the strategy and execution of large-scale, technically complex, and cross-functional programs that typically span across towers/organizations, working in close conjunction with the required tech and product roles.
  • This includes creating a program plan inclusive of timelines, milestones, scoping, prioritization, execution, risk management, and communication.
  • They help the team strategically prioritize the requirements and drive alignment with senior leaders.

Technical Depth

  • Exhibit strong technical acumen and have a deep understanding of the technical aspects and capabilities of their organization.
  • TPMs use this experience to influence roadmaps and architecture decisions, identify and resolve hard technical dependencies, and help make the right technical tradeoffs.
  • They are regarded as a subject matter expert in an area within their organization (e.g., One Pipeline, ML) and are consulted as a key advisor by engineering, product, and other cross-functional leads.
  • They identify opportunities within their organization to create new features for an area or consolidate existing ones in an area for better engineering and products.

Leadership

  • Regarded as a thought leader in their organization.
  • They are self-directed, proactively defining focus areas and identifying impactful work and opportunities across the organization.
  • They help set the team direction in terms of program impact, product quality, and organization efficiency, while also promoting our values and culture on a regular basis.
  • They excel at influencing stakeholders and collaborating with cross-functional partner teams to gain buy-in for undefined areas by successfully negotiating conflicts and tradeoffs.
  • They are not afraid to escalate and resolve issues to unblock the team.
