Director of Human Resources
Our client, a nonprofit organization in the Akron area, is seeking a hands-on Director of Human Resources to lead its HR function and serve as a strategic partner to the CEO and executive team. This role combines organization-wide people strategy with day-to-day leadership of HR operations. The Director will oversee the HR team, advise managers, strengthen employee engagement, and ensure sound, consistent HR practices across the organization.
Responsibilities
Lead, coach, and manage the HR team, including setting priorities and supporting professional development. Partner with executive leadership on workforce planning, succession planning, organizational change, and talent strategy. Oversee the full employee lifecycle, including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, performance management, recognition, and offboarding. Develop and administer compensation and benefits programs, including market benchmarking and retention initiatives. Guide managers on employee relations, performance feedback, documentation, and conflict resolution.
Lead internal investigations and work with legal counsel when appropriate. Maintain the employee handbook, HR policies, and procedures, ensuring compliance with federal and Ohio employment laws and applicable funding requirements. Oversee benefits administration, leave management, accommodations, and workers’ compensation matters. Lead the HRIS and related systems, maintain accurate employee data, and identify opportunities to improve HR processes and reporting. Establish and track HR measures such as turnover, time to fill, engagement, and training completion.
Present workforce updates and recommendations to the CEO and Board. Partner with leaders across the organization to build trust in HR and support a positive, accountable workplace culture. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required; master’s degree preferred. At least 10 years of progressive human resources management experience, including a minimum of five years in an HR leadership role. Experience developing or administering compensation, benefits, and performance management programs.
Strong working knowledge of federal and Ohio employment laws. Experience administering an HRIS and using HR data to inform decisions. SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, SPHR, or PHR certification, or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire. Strong communication, coaching, problem-solving, and change management skills, along with sound judgment in handling confidential matters. HR leadership experience in a nonprofit, human services, or federally funded organization is preferred, as is experience with grant-related personnel requirements, HR system improvements, and Board reporting.
This is a hybrid role that will require traveling to another local site location once/month.
Pay: $80,000.00 - $83,000.00 per year
