Plasma Weld Specialist
Quick Overview
Job Description
2034 Plasma Weld Specialist
Scope of Work & Purpose:
We are seeking a hands-on Plasma/Weld Specialist with direct experience in advanced welding and thermal processing to support the manufacturing of custom metal alloys and advanced materials components. This role involves active engagement on the production floor, executing and optimizing welding processes for a variety of welding processes and modalities. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong practical knowledge of multiple welding processes including TIG, MIG, and plasma arc welding. Experience with advanced materials, dissimilar metal joining, and additive manufacturing repair is a plus. This position requires a deep understanding of welding metallurgy, process parameters, a proactive approach to solving joining challenges, and a strong commitment to safety in a high-hazard environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Welding and Thermal Processing Operations:
• Execute welding operations using various processes including GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and plasma arc welding (PAW) for standard and custom metal alloys and components ranging from simple beads on plate to full scale additively manufactured builds of 10s-100s of lbs.
• Develop and optimize welding procedures and parameters for novel alloys and joining applications.
• Capture process data to support validation of process models
• Ensure that all welded products meet quality standards and customer specifications through visual inspection and non-destructive testing coordination.
Process Development and Optimization:
• Drive development of welding procedures (WPS) and methods for joining novel alloys safely and efficiently.
• Conduct weld trials and process optimization studies to improve quality, efficiency, and reduce defects.
• Support qualification of welding procedures and welder performance testing as required.
• Collaborate with engineering team to troubleshoot welding-related issues and implement solutions.
Maintenance and Safety:
• Perform routine maintenance on welding equipment, plasma systems, and related tooling to ensure safety, quality, and reduce downtime.
• Adhere to safety protocols to minimize risks associated with welding operations, compressed gases, and high-temperature processes.
• Follow procedures for sorting, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain to ensure a safe and organized work environment.
• Participate in regular safety inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure adherence to safety regulations.
• Maintain proper ventilation, fume extraction, and PPE usage in welding areas.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
Education and Experience:
• A B.S. degree in welding engineering, materials science, manufacturing engineering, or a related field, with 3+ years of hands-on welding experience, ideally within the metal manufacturing industry. Experience with advanced welding processes, exotic alloys, and welding procedure development is highly desirable.
OR
• An A.S. degree or technical certification in welding technology with AWS certification (CWI, CWE, or equivalent), with 5+ years of hands-on welding experience across multiple processes, ideally within the metal manufacturing industry. Experience with TIG welding of specialty alloys, plasma systems, and weld-based additive manufacturing is highly desirable.
Technical Knowledge: Technical expertise in multiple welding processes (GTAW, GMAW, PAW, etc.), welding metallurgy, and heat treatment is desirable. Candidates should have an understanding of welding codes and standards (AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, etc.), non-destructive testing methods, and advanced joining technologies.
Safety and Compliance: A thorough understanding of welding safety protocols, compressed gas handling, hot work permits, and regulatory compliance related to welding operations is essential. Knowledge of welding fume hazards and proper ventilation requirements is required.
Leadership Skills: This position has no direct reports; however, candidates should demonstrate the ability to inspire and motivate team members, foster a culture of quality craftsmanship, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Communication and Problem-Solving: Strong communication skills are vital for effectively coordinating with production teams, addressing welding challenges, and liaising with internal stakeholders and external partners. Candidates should also possess excellent problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot welding defects and implement effective solutions in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
