Mechanical Engineer (Estates Technician)

Location: Essex

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified Mechanical Engineer to join a large NHS Estates & Facilities team. Working within a complex acute healthcare environment, you will play a key role in maintaining and improving critical mechanical infrastructure that supports the delivery of frontline patient care.

As part of a multi-skilled Estates team, you will be responsible for carrying out planned and reactive maintenance across a diverse range of mechanical plant and building services. This position offers exposure to a wide variety of equipment and systems within a technically challenging environment where no two days are the same.

Key Responsibilities:

• Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance across the estate.
• Diagnose, fault-find, repair and maintain a wide range of mechanical systems and equipment.
• Maintain boilers, pumps, motors, valves, pipework, water systems and HVAC equipment.
• Undertake maintenance of air handling units, ventilation systems, chiller plant, heating systems and hot and cold water services.
• Support the maintenance of critical infrastructure, including medical gas systems where appropriately trained.
• Respond to emergency breakdowns and critical incidents to minimise disruption to clinical services.
• Undertake installation, refurbishment and improvement works across the estate.
• Complete maintenance records, compliance documentation and work orders using CAFM systems.
• Work closely with contractors, clinical teams and operational departments to ensure a high-quality service.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

• Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance across the estate.
• NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Heating & Ventilation, Plumbing, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
• A completed Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship.
• Relevant City & Guilds qualifications or equivalent experience.
• Previous experience working within building services, estates maintenance, facilities management, healthcare, commercial, or industrial environments.
• Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills across a range of mechanical systems.
• Experience maintaining boilers, pumps, HVAC systems, ventilation plant, water systems, and associated mechanical equipment.
• A sound understanding of Health & Safety legislation and safe systems of work.
• The ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
