Job Description
Systems Engineer
Key Role Details
Location: South-East, UK (hybrid)
Contract: 15-month fixed-term contract
Role Overview
We are seeking a Systems Engineer to join an Engineering team responsible for the delivery, integration and evolution of complex software-intensive technology systems.
The role involves the analysis, design, integration and delivery of technical solutions, ensuring that systems meet defined requirements, technical standards, quality expectations and project objectives.
Working closely with customers, project managers, software developers, infrastructure specialists, hardware engineers and other technical stakeholders, the Systems Engineer will contribute throughout the full systems lifecycle, from requirements capture and solution architecture through to integration, verification, validation, deployment and ongoing development.
The successful candidate will have a structured approach to engineering complex systems, with the ability to translate business and customer needs into clear, traceable technical requirements and practical, scalable solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Lead requirements elicitation, analysis, capture and decomposition activities for complex technology and software integration projects.
Facilitate technical workshops and stakeholder discussions to establish functional and non-functional requirements, system constraints, dependencies and acceptance criteria.
Analyse, design and document cost-effective technical solutions that meet customer, business and project objectives.
Develop and maintain system architectures, functional designs, interface specifications, integration strategies and other systems engineering documentation.
Define and manage requirements traceability across business objectives, system requirements, subsystem specifications, implementation and verification activities.
Analyse system interfaces, data flows, dependencies and interactions between software applications, infrastructure components and external systems.
Specify and document software interfaces and APIs, including HTTP/S, REST and JSON-based integrations.
Support the definition of system boundaries, component responsibilities, integration patterns and technical design decisions.
Develop and maintain systems engineering plans covering integration, verification, validation, qualification and acceptance.
Work with software development, infrastructure and test teams to resolve technical issues and ensure that integrated solutions perform as intended.
Contribute to technical proposals, project estimates, Statements of Work (SoW) and solution feasibility assessments.
Provide systems engineering input into project planning, scheduling, dependency management and technical risk assessments.
Participate in design reviews, technical assurance activities, customer presentations and discussions with external stakeholders and suppliers.
Support system deployment, transition into service and the resolution of integration issues throughout implementation.
Promote engineering best practice, documentation quality, configuration control and continuous improvement.
Maintain awareness of emerging technologies, software engineering practices, industry standards and systems engineering methodologies.
Ensure compliance with relevant security, quality, operational and health and safety requirements.
Travel domestically and internationally, where required, to support project delivery and stakeholder engagement.
Undertake additional engineering responsibilities as reasonably required.
Qualifications and Experience Required
Essential:
Degree in Systems Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
Previous experience working as a Systems Engineer on complex software, technology or systems integration projects.
Demonstrable experience applying systems engineering principles across the full project lifecycle.
Experience in requirements elicitation, analysis, decomposition, specification and management using structured systems engineering methodologies.
Strong understanding of system architecture, solution design, component interactions and systems integration.
Experience analysing and documenting software interfaces and APIs, including HTTP/S, REST and JSON.
Understanding of distributed systems, data exchange, system dependencies and integration between multiple software components or platforms.
Knowledge of verification, validation, system testing and acceptance principles.
Experience working with customers and managing technical stakeholders to establish requirements and resolve complex technical issues.
Ability to produce clear, structured technical documentation, architecture descriptions, interface specifications and engineering reports.
Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Desirable:
Experience delivering large-scale, software-intensive systems or complex technology integration programmes.
Experience using requirements management tools such as IBM DOORS.
Knowledge of UML, Enterprise Architect or other model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools.
Familiarity with system modelling, interface control documentation and architecture design methods.
Experience working in Windows and UNIX/Linux environments.
Understanding of software development lifecycles, configuration management, change control and release management.
Awareness of ITIL, service transition, operational support and systems lifecycle management.
Experience working within environments with demanding requirements for system availability, resilience, performance, security or reliability.
INCOSE certification, ITIL certification or a relevant postgraduate qualification.
Skills and Personal Attributes
Strong analytical, logical and structured problem-solving skills.
Ability to understand complex technical environments and break them down into manageable systems, components, interfaces and requirements.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to engage at all levels.
Ability to influence multidisciplinary teams and establish effective working relationships across engineering, software development, infrastructure, testing and project management.
Commercial awareness and an understanding of the balance between technical quality, delivery schedules, cost and business objectives.
Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
Methodical approach, excellent attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality.
Ability to identify technical risks, dependencies, inconsistencies and gaps in requirements.
Adaptability and the ability to learn new technologies, tools and engineering approaches quickly.
Commitment to continuous professional development and engineering best practice.
Willingness to travel in support of project and customer requirements.
