Job description

About Joulen The energy system is changing fast. As renewable generation and electrification spread, flexibility becomes more valuable, and assets such as home batteries, commercial and industrial batteries, electric vehicles and grid-scale storage can all help balance supply and demand. Capturing that value takes direct market access, sophisticated forecasting and real-time optimisation. Joulen provides all three. We trade directly in energy markets and use our platform to forecast tradable volumes and find the strongest opportunity in any given period, so flexible assets earn more than they otherwise would. We do this with installers, energy retailers and OEMs, who gain a stronger customer proposition and a new revenue stream, while asset owners see better returns and the grid gets more flexibility. The role Forward-deployed engineers work directly with the people who use our software. You will join our Trading Operations team and build what the desk needs across front, middle and back office trading, shipping quickly and seeing your work used within days. What you learn on the desk feeds back into Product and Engineering. Trading is where you start, but we plan to extend the model across Joulen, so a strong placement here can lead into other parts of the business. What youll do Find the friction.Sit with traders and operations analysts, identify the manual, slow or error-prone parts of their day, then build and ship tools that remove them. Front office.Build position, forecast and market-data views that help the desk decide what to trade and when. Middle office.Automate checks on trades, positions and the data moving between our platform and market systems, and surface exceptions before they cost money. Back office.Improve settlement reconciliation, metered volume handling and the reporting behind partner invoicing. Leave it better.Write clear documentation and hand over production-quality work that Engineering is happy to own. What youll bring ESSENTIAL Graduate or Masters degree in a STEM subject. Strong engineering fundamentals in any language. You can design, build, test and debug software end to end, and you pick up unfamiliar tools quickly. Comfort with data: writing queries, cleaning messy real-world datasets and checking that numbers add up. Clear communication with non-engineers, and the judgement to work out the problem someone actually has. DESIRABLE Exposure to finance, trading or markets through study, a society, a trading competition or personal projects. Things you have built outside coursework. No energy market knowledge is needed; we will teach you. What we offer Competitive salary 22 days annual leave plus 11 public holidays Option to buy additional annual leave Pension Life Assurance Private Medical Insurance How We Work Joulen runs on six operating principles: Customer Centricity, Talent Density, Move with Urgency, Radical Candour, Disagree & Commit, and Owner-Operators. In practice that means you will be given the outcome and the autonomy to get there, you will get direct feedback and be expected to give it, and you will be trusted to make decisions in your area without waiting for permission. New joiners go through Joulen Bootcamp, our structured onboarding programme, so you will understand the energy markets we operate in and how our product works, not just the ledger.
