About the Role

This is a position through X-Team. As a Lead Backend Engineer, you will join an enterprise engineering squad within a leading Australian banking and financial services organization, working on a large-scale Open Banking and mobile platform ecosystem.
You will lead the modernization of core backend services, transitioning traditional batch processing toward real-time data polling and building highly resilient backend architecture that supports millions of customers.
You will work extensively with Go, Temporal, PostgreSQL, gRPC, Protocol Buffers, AWS, and Kubernetes, while collaborating closely with engineering teams and client stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable, and reliable financial services.
This will require onsite work in Melbourne, Australia for stakeholder alignment. Candidates must be open to this initial onsite commitment.

Most Important

Backend Engineering: 5+ years of senior backend engineering experience with strong proficiency in Go (strongly preferred) or Java, particularly in high-concurrency and distributed environments.

Workflow Orchestration: Production experience with Temporal or equivalent durable workflow frameworks for distributed state, long-running processes, retries, and fault-tolerant execution.

Database & APIs: Strong PostgreSQL experience, including schema design and query optimization, along with deep experience designing gRPC / Protocol Buffers APIs.

Real-Time & Cloud: Experience transitioning batch architectures toward real-time data polling, event-driven processing, or streaming, with production experience on AWS / Kubernetes / EKS.

Security & Location: Experience building secure enterprise backend services and willingness to work onsite in Melbourne for the first 2-4 weeks, with appropriate Australian work authorization or a viable visa pathway.

Nice to Have

Financial Services: Experience with Open Banking, OAuth2 consent management, financial APIs, or secure financial transaction processing.

Infrastructure & Security: Experience with Terraform, Helm, Snyk, automated vulnerability scanning, security patching, or enterprise DevOps practices.

Platform Tooling: Experience with HashiCorp Vault for secrets management and LaunchDarkly for feature flags and progressive rollouts.

Mobile & Distributed Systems: Familiarity with client-side caching, offline-first synchronization, SQLite, or highly resilient distributed architectures.

Multi-Cloud & Testing: Exposure to AWS and GCP, along with strong shift-left testing, automation, and security practices.

Strong technical leadership skills with the ability to make sound architectural decisions and guide other engineers.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with confidence working directly with enterprise clients.

Strong ownership and problem-solving mindset, with a focus on reliability, scalability, resilience, and operational excellence.

Collaborative, pragmatic, and adaptable, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced enterprise engineering environment.

Security-conscious and proactive, with a strong commitment to quality, automation, continuous improvement, and enabling team success.
