Job Description

Are you an Operational Risk professional with genuine physical commodities experience looking for a role that offers greater commercial exposure, influence, and variety?

We're partnering with a leading global commodities business seeking a Senior Manager, Operational Risk to join a growing team responsible for overseeing operational risk across physical commodities activities. This is a newly created position, reflecting continued investment and growth across the commodities franchise, particularly within the oil and metals markets.

This is not a traditional framework-driven operational risk role. The successful candidate will operate in a highly visible position, working closely with front office, logistics, operations and business leadership teams to understand, challenge and strengthen controls across the end-to-end commodities lifecycle.

The Opportunity

You'll sit within a specialist risk team that provides independent oversight across trading, logistics, storage, transportation and delivery activities. The role offers a unique blend of first and second line exposure, requiring someone who can engage directly with the business, understand how transactions are executed, and identify operational risks before they materialise.

The team is looking for someone who can move beyond standard operational risk assessments and genuinely understand the practical realities of physical commodity trading. Whether it's vessel movements, inventory ownership, title transfer, storage arrangements or supply chain disruptions, you'll be involved in analysing the key risks underpinning complex commodity transactions.

This is a highly collaborative environment where you'll partner with stakeholders across EMEA and play a key role in shaping and enhancing the operational risk framework as the business continues to expand.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide independent oversight of operational risks across physical commodity trading activities.
  2. Assess risks and controls across the end-to-end trade lifecycle.
  3. Review logistics, transportation, storage and inventory-related operational risks.
  4. Challenge and enhance control frameworks, governance processes and risk reporting.
  5. Support the review of new products, transactions and business initiatives.
  6. Analyse incidents, thematic reviews and control weaknesses to identify emerging risks.
  7. Partner closely with front office, operations, logistics, legal and risk teams across the business.
  8. Influence senior stakeholders and contribute to the continued evolution of the operational risk function.

About You

We're particularly interested in individuals with experience across:

  1. Physical commodities trading, logistics, scheduling or operations.
  2. Operational Risk, Business Risk & Controls, Internal Audit or related risk functions.
  3. Oil, metals or broader commodity markets.
  4. Trade lifecycle controls, inventory controls and supply chain risk.
  5. Challenging and influencing stakeholders within fast-paced trading environments.

Candidates could come from commodity trading houses, energy trading businesses, investment banks with physical commodities exposure, or specialist commodity finance organisations.

Why Apply?
  1. Newly created role with significant visibility and scope.
  2. Opportunity to help shape and build a growing risk function.
  3. Broad exposure across physical commodities operations.
  4. High-profile stakeholder engagement across the business.
  5. Strong balance of commercial involvement and independent challenge.
  6. Collaborative, entrepreneurial culture with significant growth ambitions.
  7. Exposure across EMEA with interaction across multiple international locations

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who combines a strong risk mindset with a practical understanding of physical commodities and wants to play a meaningful role in supporting an expanding global business.
