Quick Overview
Job Description
Tokamak Energy is a global leader in fusion energy and high temperature superconducting (HTS) technologies. We work with governments and industry to develop and bring fusion and HTS solutions to market through innovation and strategic partnerships. A major part of this is our end to end capability in HTS systems, from design to manufacturing.
We are the Magnet Systems Partner for the UK Government's STEP Fusion programme, under a £70 million contract running to 2029, working with UK Fusion Energy to deliver HTS magnet systems for the STEP prototype power plant, while also contributing to tokamak systems and plasma integration.
Founded in 2009 as a spin-out from the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Tokamak Energy is headquartered in Oxfordshire, with subsidiaries in the United States and Japan. Today, we employ over 300 people and have secured more than £280 million in investment.
We operate through three divisions:
Fusion - Fusion energy technologies, expertise and testbeds for government and private fusion programmes, including ST40, the world’s highest field spherical tokamak.
TE Magnetics - HTS systems for commercial applications including fusion energy, power distribution, life sciences, and propulsion.
Ridgway Machines - Manufacturing equipment for the superconducting, electrical and wider energy sectors, enabling the rapid industrialisation of HTS products.
Join the team helping to define the future of fusion energy and advanced superconducting technologies
At Tokamak Energy, we're tackling some of the world's most complex engineering challenges. We're looking for a Systems Integration Engineer who thrives on bringing structure to complexity, connecting information across teams, and helping turn ambitious engineering concepts into deliverable technology.
This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role on a major programme, working at the intersection of systems engineering, advanced magnet technology, cryogenics, power systems and large-scale engineering integration.
You'll work closely with technical leaders and multidisciplinary engineering teams, helping to define requirements, manage interfaces, build system architectures and ensure critical decisions are made with confidence and clarity. The role has been created because demand for systems engineering expertise is growing and we're looking for someone who can become a key contributor to programme success from day one.
Why this role is exciting
This isn't a role where you'll be maintaining established products or supporting incremental improvements.
You'll be working in an environment where technologies are evolving, requirements are emerging, and engineering challenges often don't have obvious answers.
Success requires curiosity, collaboration and an ability to break down complex problems into manageable parts. You'll engage with experts across multiple disciplines, gather information from diverse stakeholders and help create the system-level understanding needed to deliver world-leading technology.
Whether your background is in aerospace, advanced automotive, defence R&D, nuclear, space, robotics or another technically demanding environment, this role offers the chance to apply your systems engineering skills to genuinely novel challenges.
What you'll be doing
- Supporting systems engineering activities across major engineering programmes.
- Capturing, managing and maintaining system requirements and ensuring full traceability.
- Developing system architectures, functional breakdown structures and interface definitions.
- Coordinating information across multidisciplinary teams including magnet design, cryogenics, electrical systems, instrumentation and plant integration.
- Working with programme and technical leads to support informed engineering decisions.
- Supporting technical reviews and readiness reviews.
- Identifying, managing and tracking technical risks.
- Developing verification and validation strategies for complex systems.
- Defining and maintaining critical interfaces between teams, suppliers and external partners.
- Supporting the continuous improvement of systems engineering processes, tools and methodologies.
Location
This is a permanent position based in Oxfordshire with hybrid working available. Regular onsite collaboration is expected, typically around three days per week across programme locations, depending on project needs.
Essential
- A degree in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
- Experience applying systems engineering methodologies within complex engineering environments.
- A track record of requirements management, architecture development and verification activities.
- Experience working on technically complex products, systems or programmes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Experience working across multiple engineering disciplines.
- Experience using requirements management tools.
- Salary guide up to £55,000 per annum dependent on experience
- 25 days holiday + bank holidays, plus discretionary festive shutdown
- Performance-led rewards including discretionary bonus, innovation and merit schemes
- Share options – a stake in our future success
- Pension and comprehensive financial protection package including death in service and critical illness cover
- Health and wellbeing support, including cash plan and 24/7 assistance
- Ongoing investment in your growth with training and career progression
- Be part of world-changing innovation in Fusion Energy
