Job description

Fastmarkets is an industry-leading price-reporting agency (PRA) and information provider for global commodities, providing price data, news, analytics and events for the agriculture, forest products, metals and mining and new-generation energy markets.

Fastmarkets' data is critical for customers seeking to understand and predict dynamic, sometimes opaque markets, enabling trading and risk management. Fastmarkets is a global business with a history dating back to 1865 and is built on trust and deep market knowledge. It has more than 700 employees spread across global locations in the UK, US, China, India, Singapore, Brazil, Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland and beyond.

The Role

Fastmarkets is looking for a Global Freight Editor to establish and lead a new freight reporting and pricing capability within the editorial function. This is a new role with the opportunity to build a specialist team, define the editorial strategy and develop a roadmap for freight prices and content that support Fastmarkets’ commodity markets. The Global Freight Editor will be a market expert, an experienced people leader and a strategic builder, able to recruit and develop talent, establish robust methodologies and demonstrate how greater freight transparency can strengthen Fastmarkets’ pricing and customer value.

Principal accountabilities

  • Build and lead a new global freight reporting and pricing team within Fastmarkets’ editorial function, recruiting an initial group of reporters and developing a clear plan to grow the team over time.
  • Develop and implement the editorial strategy for freight coverage, identifying the routes, markets and price assessments where Fastmarkets can create the greatest value for customers and its commodity franchises.
  • Own and drive the freight pricing roadmap, prioritising a pipeline of assessments and leading the team to launch, develop and promote prices and content that increase relevance, adoption and usage.
  • Create freight prices and market intelligence that reinforce Fastmarkets’ commodity methodologies, support the creation of derived commodity prices and improve transparency around the end-to-end costs of materials.
  • Establish robust operating processes for the new team, including clear coverage responsibilities, reporting standards, source development, methodology documentation and publishing schedules.
  • Guide the team to produce robust, IOSCO-compliant price assessments, ensuring methodology, documentation, operational and administrative requirements are met and company compliance standards are consistently upheld.
  • Oversee the allocation of resources across markets and global offices so that day-to-day pricing and reporting duties are met while the team builds capacity to deliver agreed growth plans.
  • Recruit, manage, coach and develop a small initial team of freight market reporters, setting clear priorities and building capability, accountability and collaboration as the function grows.
  • Monitor developments across global freight markets and translate market change, customer needs and competitive intelligence into timely editorial, pricing and content priorities.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Global Head of Editorial and Pricing and other functional heads on the strategy, roadmap, recruitment, risks, dependencies and progress, helping implementation achieve maximum impact.

We recruit talented, dynamic people with diverse backgrounds and experiences, all united by a belief in our mission to provide the world’s leading and most trusted price reporting, events, and intelligence service for the markets we serve. We’re proud to be an equal opportunities employer and are committed to creating a fully inclusive workplace, where everyone feels able to participate and contribute meaningfully.

If you are open-minded, curious, resilient, solutions-oriented and committed to promoting equality, then read on.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

We are looking for an individual who is highly motivated, driven, and have a passion to be part of a fast-paced, successful team. Being a strong team player is also important as well as someone who is happy to work flexibly.

  • Deep knowledge of global freight markets, including key routes, cost drivers, market participants and the relationship between freight and physical commodity pricing
  • Strong strategic judgement, with the ability to identify where freight coverage can reinforce commodity methodologies, enable derived prices and create customer value
  • Proven ability to build a new editorial or pricing capability, including recruitment, team design, operating processes and phased growth planning
  • Proven people-management and coaching skills, including the ability to lead reporters across different global offices and time zones
  • Strong understanding of price reporting, benchmark development, methodology governance and the requirements of IOSCO-compliant assessments
  • Ability to prioritise routes, markets and resources effectively across daily pricing, market reporting and longer-term growth initiatives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with confidence presenting to customers, industry participants and senior internal stakeholders
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively with commodity editorial teams, Analytics, Product, Market Development, Commercial, Marketing, Technology, Sales and Events
  • Confidence to influence and challenge at senior level, supported by clear evidence, sound judgement and an understanding of business priorities
  • Strong relationship-management skills and an established or developing network across global freight and commodity markets

Experience

Experienced price reporter, editor and people manager, ideally with direct experience of freight, shipping, logistics, energy or commodity markets

  • Demonstrable experience of launching, developing, promoting and defending price assessments or benchmarks, and of building a new coverage area, team or editorial growth plan

Key interfaces

  • Reports to the Global Head of Editorial and Pricing
  • Directly manages a small new global team of freight market reporters, with responsibility for recruiting the initial team and planning its growth over time
  • Works closely with commodity editors and the Analytics team to identify where freight data can strengthen methodologies, support derived prices and improve customer understanding of end-to-end material costs
  • Regular liaison with Market Development, Product, Commercial, Marketing, Technology, Sales and Events to support implementation of the freight strategy and pricing roadmap
  • Regular interaction with customers and industry participants, including high-level meetings to understand market needs, build source networks and promote Fastmarkets’ freight offering
