Type: Full-time
Important: A Ph.D. and prior U.S. Federal Government project experience are mandatory requirements for this position. Candidates who do not meet both requirements will not be considered.
Arch Systems is seeking a Principal Investigator to lead research and technical execution for an advanced AI-enabled Naval Aircrew human-performance and readiness program. The PI will lead the design, feasibility evaluation, and transition of a multimodal intelligence capability that combines physiological, behavioral, performance, and human-system data to detect and forecast emerging cognitive, physical, and psychological vulnerabilities while providing explainable evidence to aeromedical professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical and scientific direction of the AERIS Phase I research program.
- Define research hypotheses, experiments, validation methods, and measurable feasibility criteria.
- Guide development of personalized multimodal models using physiological, gaze, performance, and contextual data.
- Oversee methods for time-series modeling, sensor fusion, uncertainty calibration, explainability, and selective prediction.
- Ensure scientific rigor in subject-disjoint evaluation, ablation, robustness, and false-alert analysis.
- Collaborate with AI/ML engineers, software developers, aviation/human-factors SMEs, and aeromedical experts.
- Support Phase II planning for human-subject validation, simulator/sensor integration, and operational transition.
- Provide technical leadership for SBIR deliverables, Government reviews, demonstrations, and research documentation.
Required Qualifications
- PhD strongly preferred in Human Factors, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Cognitive Science, Aerospace Engineering, Neuroscience, AI/ML, or related discipline.
- 8–12+ years of relevant R&D experience.
- Demonstrated experience in one or more of: multimodal ML, physiological signal processing, human-state estimation, cognitive workload, sensor fusion, predictive analytics, or trustworthy AI.
- Strong experimental-design and statistical-validation background.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams and applied research programs.
Highly Preferred
- Prior work with Navy, NAVAIR, NAWCAD, NAMI, NHRC, NAMRU, ONR, AFRL, NASA, FAA, or other DoD human-performance organizations.
- Research involving aircrew, pilots, aviation simulators, aerospace physiology, fatigue, spatial disorientation, cognitive workload, eye tracking, or human-automation interaction.
- Peer-reviewed publications and/or patents in human performance, multimodal sensing, physiological analytics, AI/ML, or aviation human factors.
- SBIR/STTR or Federal R&D proposal and execution experience.
- Familiarity with IRB/HRPO and human-subject research requirements.
