A bit about the role

Aberdeen Priority Families Service is a partnership between Action for Children, Aberdeen City Council, Sport Aberdeen and Aberdeen Foyer. The service aims to improve the outcomes for families who have multiple and complex needs. Families are referred to the service as they need additional support to work on issues that can include problems within school, anti-social or offending behaviour, and child, or adult welfare concerns.

We’re thrilled to announce that our organisation has successfully secured a contract extension, which has opened up new avenues for growth and service. With this extension, this enables us to broaden our operations, extending crucial support to families in need.

The Family Support Practitioner will be part of a multi-disciplinary team that works for a period of up to 12 months with families to support and enable positive change and to improve outcomes.

An assessment of need will be undertaken to identify needs, strengths, and challenges that each family faces, the intensive interventions will involve advice, guidance, parenting support, 1:1 work with children and liaising with partner agencies.

You’ll carry out assessments, intensive planned support and reviews and support families to overcome barriers.  Working as part of a team, you’ll attend meetings and work alongside partner agencies, advocating on behalf of children and families.

How you'll help to create brighter futures

Some key responsibilities for the role are;

  • Effectively assessing the needs of families and responding to them.
  • Working collaboratively with families to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Listening to children, young people and families concerns.
  • Working in an integrated way as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team.

Let's talk about you

  • An SVQ 3 in social care or equivalent.
  • Experience of working with vulnerable families and the issues and barriers they face.
  • Knowledge and awareness of methods of assessment and interventions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing and through presentations.
  • Experience of developing multidisciplinary support plans.
  • Experience of working with children, young people, their families, and carers to promote and to ensure safeguarding and the welfare of the child / young person.

Why Action for Children?

Every child should have a loving home, food, warmth, the chance to grow and learn - the support to cope with life’s challenges. But too many children don’t. By bringing your passion and unique skills and experience, you’ll help us change that where it really matters.

We've been driven by love to take action for children for over 150 years, giving them the protection and practical help they need. A lot’s changed since 1869. But what children really need, hasn’t. So as long as children need us, we’ll be here.

Our Commitment to Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism

At Action for Children, we are committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels respected, valued, and able to thrive. We know that racism and discrimination create barriers, and we are taking active steps to challenge these inequalities in our organisation and in the communities we serve.

We strongly welcome applications from people who are Black, Asian, or from other racialised and ethnically marginalised communities, as well as disabled people, who are currently under-represented in our workforce. We are committed to removing barriers in our recruitment processes and ensuring fair access to opportunities.

We also encourage applications from men, who are under-represented in our Children’s Services roles. We recognise that people hold multiple identities, and we value the richness this brings to our team.
