Digital Backend Engineer
Location: Vienna, Virginia preferred; open to candidates local to Winchester, Virginia; Pensacola, Florida; or San Diego, California (Hybrid)
Role Overview
We are seeking a mid-to-senior Backend Engineer to design, develop, test, integrate, and maintain backend services and digital systems that support mobile and online banking platforms. This role involves collaboration with analysts, QA testers, frontend engineers, and cross-functional teams to deliver secure and scalable solutions. The position requires independent work on complex initiatives with minimal supervision and providing technical guidance to other engineers.
Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, integrate, and maintain secure backend services and APIs for mobile, web, and enterprise systems.
• Design for performance, reliability, resiliency, and quality.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and deliver sustainable technical solutions.
• Develop and maintain unit, integration, and automated tests.
• Apply secure coding, data protection, and engineering standards.
• Troubleshoot production defects, performance bottlenecks, and integration issues.
• Refactor code and conduct peer reviews to improve security and quality.
• Contribute to solution design, technical documentation, and proof-of-concepts.
• Support services across testing, deployment, and production troubleshooting.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies and advocate for continuous improvement.
• Share knowledge and support the development of less experienced engineers.

Required Qualifications

• Strong experience with Java, preferably Java 17 or newer.
• Solid knowledge of enterprise Java, Spring, Spring Boot, web services, and RESTful APIs.
• Experience with automated testing frameworks such as JUnit and Mockito.
• Proficiency with Git and CI/CD tools such as Maven, Docker, Jenkins, GitHub, or Azure DevOps.
• Strong understanding of databases, SQL, and data integration patterns.
• Experience troubleshooting distributed systems and designing scalable, resilient microservices.
• Experience developing cloud-native applications, with a preference for Microsoft Azure.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of the banking or financial services industry.
• Experience working in Agile environments.
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures and messaging technologies, such as Kafka.
• Exposure to data engineering concepts, data management, and high-volume data integrations.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and system design skills.
• Ability to use AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity.
• Awareness of sustainable coding practices and efficient system design.
