Graduate Embedded Software Engineer (C, Python)
Quick overview
Job description
Graduate Embedded Software Engineer (C, Python)
Southampton (3 days per week onsite)
Up to £38,000 + 5% Bonus
Your new company
You'll be joining the European HQ of a high-growth, innovation-led semiconductor business operating at the forefront of next-gen connectivity technology. The company is pushing technical boundaries, with significant investment into R&D and a clear vision to lead across firmware and software.
The role is hybrid and you'll be required to work 3 days onsite near Fareham / Southampton.
Your new role
This is a graduate level opportunity to start your career in embedded software, working alongside experienced software, IC, systems and applications engineers on firmware and algorithms for advanced capacitive touch sensor products used by leading consumer electronics customers. You will be learning from people at the top of their field, with real responsibility from early on and a clear path to grow.
Day to day, you will write and debug embedded C on resource-constrained microcontrollers, thinking carefully about execution time, memory usage and reliability. You will also use Python for data analysis, simulation and algorithm prototyping, investigating how real sensors behave and turning your findings into robust firmware and test solutions on hardware. You will help develop algorithms for tracking and interpreting user input, support product development by diagnosing issues with the wider team, and contribute to features driven by customer input.
This is a true embedded environment, so you will be working close to the hardware and learning how software, silicon and sensors fit together. The environment is collaborative with a strong engineering culture where people are trusted to take ownership and make a tangible impact on product direction. Despite its growth trajectory, there remains a close-knit feel across teams, with a real emphasis on knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
What you'll need to succeed
You must hold a BSc or BEng in Electronics, Computer Science, Software Engineering or a similar relevant subject, along with solid placement or post-graduate experience in engineering. You will have strong programming fundamentals, ideally in C, gained through your studies or practical projects, and a genuine interest in embedded systems, electronics, mathematics or signal processing.
Familiarity with Python, MATLAB or LabVIEW, and with version control tools like Git, would be strongly beneficial, as would an awareness of testing approaches and Agile working. An interest in digital signal processing is an advantage.
Whilst the tech match is important, at Graduate level it isn't everything. Above all, you will be curious, logical in how you solve problems, and able to explain your technical thinking clearly and document your work well. Juniors that excel here often have a genuine interest in embedded software, to the extent it can be hard for them to say what their other hobbies away from engineering are!
You must be open to travelling to China for work, which is estimated at 1 to 2 times per year for no longer than 2 week periods.
What you'll get in return
In return, you'll be joining a business where engineering excellence sits at the core of its success, offering the chance to work on genuinely cutting-edge technology with experienced engineers who will mentor you from day one. The package includes a salary of up to £38,000, a 5% annual bonus, private health and dental cover, an EV car salary sacrifice scheme, and mental health assistance programmes and wellbeing support. The working environment is collaborative and engaging, with modern offices and flexible working hours available.
