Job Description




A leading digital publishing organization is seeking a Sr WordPress Web Engineer to help advance content experiences across WordPress, React, and GraphQL. About the Opportunity:




  • Shift: Day shift




  • Schedule: Monday to Friday (3 days in office)




  • Hours: Standard business




  • Setting: Hybrid




Responsibilities:




  • Develop and maintain custom WordPress themes, plugins, blocks, post types, taxonomies, and page templates.




  • Build reusable, accessible React components and page experiences for article, video, live event, and subscription surfaces.




  • Design, implement, and evolve GraphQL schemas, queries, mutations, resolvers, caching, and API contracts.




  • Integrate WordPress with external services, including content feeds, identity, subscriptions, advertising, analytics, search, and notification systems.




  • Support production operations by troubleshooting publishing, caching, cron, content sync, and integration issues while partnering with cross-functional teams.




Qualifications:




  • 5+ years of hands-on WordPress engineering experience, including custom plugin and theme development in PHP.




  • Strong experience with React and modern JavaScript or TypeScript, including component architecture, state management, testing, performance, and accessibility.




  • Strong GraphQL experience, including schema design, resolver implementation, query performance, caching, and API documentation.




  • Experience running WordPress at scale on a high-traffic platform.




  • Experience integrating WordPress with REST and GraphQL APIs, scheduled jobs, webhooks, third-party content feeds, and cache layers.




  • Deep knowledge of WordPress content modeling, including custom post types, custom fields, taxonomies, Gutenberg blocks, publishing workflows, redirects, and search indexing.




  • Experience debugging production issues across CMS, frontend, API, caching, and external integrations.




  • Strong understanding of web accessibility, responsive design, SEO fundamentals, Core Web Vitals, and secure development practices.




  • Ability to communicate clearly with non-engineering partners and write maintainable technical documentation.




Desired Skills:




  • Experience in media, publishing, streaming, newsroom, or other high-traffic consumer web environments.




  • Experience with live-streaming or VOD integrations, DRM-protected content, identity and authentication, and subscription or entitlement flows.




  • Experience with Node.js, build tooling, CI/CD, Docker, cloud services, and observability tooling.




  • Experience with Elasticsearch or search platforms, CDN and image optimization, ad-tech, analytics, and community or commenting platforms.




  • Experience supporting mobile teams through GraphQL contracts, mocks, schema introspection, versioning, and integration testing.




  • Familiarity with performance or load testing and cache invalidation strategies.
