Job Description
We are looking for a hands-on, customer-focused Field Service Engineer to join an established engineering business specialising in industrial lifting, conveying and materials-handling equipment.
The company supplies specialist equipment to customers across manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, logistics and production environments, helping businesses move products and materials safely and efficiently.
This is an excellent opportunity for a practical mechanical engineer to join a specialist engineering team, carrying out the installation, servicing, maintenance and repair of industrial equipment at customer sites throughout the UK.
The Role
Reporting to the Service Manager, you will be responsible for carrying out planned maintenance, breakdown repairs, inspections, installations and commissioning activities across the customer base.
This is a field-based role suited to an engineer who enjoys fault-finding, working independently and resolving technical problems. You will represent the business at customer sites, ensuring equipment operates safely, reliably and efficiently while delivering a high standard of customer service.
Full product-specific training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities- Carry out planned preventative maintenance, inspections and servicing of mechanical lifting and conveying equipment.
- Diagnose faults and undertake mechanical repairs, breakdown response and remedial works.
- Support the installation, assembly, modification and commissioning of new equipment.
- Identify potential equipment failures and recommend corrective actions to minimise customer downtime.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical documentation and equipment specifications.
- Complete site work safely and efficiently, following company procedures and customer requirements.
- Prepare and follow risk assessments and method statements (RAMS), ensuring compliance with site-specific health and safety requirements.
- Produce accurate service reports, recording work completed, faults identified, parts required and recommendations for further work.
- Communicate professionally with customers, keeping them informed of progress and any issues arising on site.
- Work closely with the Service Manager and engineering team to coordinate service activities and resolve technical issues.
- Maintain company tools, equipment, PPE and any allocated service vehicle in good condition.
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, service delivery and customer satisfaction.
- Undertake relevant product training and support colleagues when required.
We are looking for an engineer with strong mechanical aptitude, a methodical approach to fault-finding and a commitment to delivering excellent customer service.
You will ideally have:
- A recognised mechanical engineering qualification, such as NVQ Level 3, an apprenticeship or an equivalent engineering qualification.
- Previous experience in a mechanical maintenance, field service, installation or industrial engineering role.
- Experience working on industrial machinery, materials-handling systems, conveyors, lifting equipment or automated equipment.
- The ability to diagnose mechanical faults and identify practical, effective solutions.
- The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical information.
- A good understanding of workplace health and safety and safe systems of work.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to plan work and manage priorities independently.
- Good communication skills and a professional, customer-focused approach.
- A flexible attitude towards travel, working at customer sites and occasional overnight stays where required.
- A full UK driving licence.
Experience with hydraulic or pneumatic systems, electrical fault-finding, automated machinery or PLC-controlled equipment would be advantageous, but is not essential for a mechanically focused candidate willing to learn.
