Java Backend Software Engineer

RESPONSIBILITIES

Kforce has a client in Westlake, TX that is seeking a Java Backend Software Engineer.

Responsibilities

• Implement backend microservices and APIs independently within established architectural patterns
• Write production-quality code: tested, observable, documented, and ready to operate
• Participate actively in code reviews: provide useful feedback to peers and apply feedback to your own work promptly
• Diagnose and resolve issues in production with appropriate urgency and communication
• Identify scope gaps and technical risks in your work early and raise them before they become blockers
• Learn and apply the team's engineering practices (CI/CD, observability, API design, testing) consistently
• Apply AI-assisted development tooling as a standard part of your workflow

REQUIREMENTS:

• Working experience with Java and Spring Boot for backend microservice development, including RESTful API design and integration
• Familiarity with cloud deployment (AWS preferred): deploying and operating containerized services
• Delivery pipeline experience: source control, CI/CD workflows, and automated testing as standard practice
• Basic observability: writing structured logs, reading dashboards, understanding what a distributed trace tells you
• Database fundamentals: writing queries, understanding indexes, choosing appropriate data storage patterns
• Experience with version control and collaborative development workflows (branching, pull requests, code review)

Preferred:

• Experience in financial services or a regulated, high-reliability industry
• Exposure to event-driven architectures or streaming systems (Kafka, SQS, or similar)
• Familiarity with OpenAPI specification and contract-first API design
• Experience with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or similar)

• Communicates clearly about progress, blockers, and scope questions; Does not go quiet when stuck
• Takes ownership of code quality: does not ship tests as an afterthought or leave observability for someone else
• Engages genuinely in code review: reads others' code with care, gives feedback that is specific and actionable
• Growing technical range: actively building new skills in areas adjacent to current expertise
• Open to AI-assisted development methods and apply them as a normal part of the workflow

The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.

Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.
