The Application Architect is responsible for defining and governing enterprise application architecture, Azure cloud solutions, security, DevSecOps, and engineering standards. This role provides technical leadership for application modernization, cloud adoption, API and microservices architecture, and secure software delivery. Working across business and technology teams, the Architect drives scalable, resilient, and maintainable solutions while promoting Shift-Left engineering, BDD-driven development, automation, security, and quality-first delivery practices.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & Technical Leadership

• Lead architecture design, technology selection, and technical governance for enterprise applications and Azure-based solutions.
• Create and maintain solution architectures, application blueprints, technical roadmaps, and architectural standards.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders and product teams to translate business requirements into scalable and maintainable technical solutions.
• Conduct architecture reviews, design reviews, and technical risk assessments.
• Establish architectural patterns and standards for APIs, microservices, event-driven architectures, integrations, and cloud-native applications.
• Mentor developers, technical leads, and engineering teams while promoting engineering excellence and architectural best practices.

Azure Cloud Architecture

• Design and govern solutions utilizing Azure services including Azure App Services, Azure API Management, Azure Functions, Azure App Configuration, Azure Key Vault, Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Azure SQL, Storage Accounts, Service Bus, and Event Grid.
• Define application resiliency, scalability, disaster recovery, and business continuity architectures.
• Develop cloud adoption strategies aligned with Azure Well-Architected Framework principles.
• Lead modernization and migration initiatives to Azure cloud platforms.
• Establish observability and operational excellence standards across applications and environments.

DevSecOps, Shift Left & Azure DevOps

• Define and implement enterprise Shift Left strategies that integrate security, quality, testing, and compliance earlier within the SDLC.
• Establish DevSecOps standards and governance across development teams.
• Lead architecture decisions related to Azure DevOps platform design, repository management, branching strategies, release management, and deployment governance.
• Define CI/CD architecture and deployment automation standards utilizing Azure DevOps and Jenkins.
• Establish quality gates, code review standards, static code analysis, open-source dependency scanning, and automated testing practices.
• Drive adoption of automated security controls leveraging tools such as Fortify and Sonatype.

BDD, TDD & Quality Engineering

• Establish and govern Behavior Driven Development (BDD) and Test Driven Development (TDD) practices across engineering teams.
• Define enterprise testing strategies including unit testing, integration testing, security testing, performance testing, and automated regression testing.
• Promote quality engineering practices that improve application reliability and maintainability.

Feature Management & Application Configuration

• Define Feature Flag, progressive delivery, and deployment strategies.
• Establish centralized application configuration using Azure App Configuration.
• Govern feature toggles, environment configurations, and release controls.
• Enable low-risk, agile application deployments.

Security & Data Protection

• Define secure cloud architecture aligned with Zero Trust principles.
• Implement security controls using Entra ID, Managed Identities, Key Vault, Private Endpoints, and RBAC.
• Establish enterprise data protection, encryption, key/secrets management, backup, and recovery strategies.
• Conduct security reviews and ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.

Documentation & Knowledge Sharing: Create and maintain architecture documentation, technical standards, reference architectures, and architectural decisions while promoting knowledge sharing across architecture, development, security, and operations teams.

Required Experience & Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience designing, developing, and supporting enterprise applications.
• 3+ years of experience as an Application Architect, Solution Architect, or equivalent architecture leadership role.
• Proven experience architecting and delivering enterprise-scale Azure solutions.
• Strong background in .NET application architecture and modern web application development.
• Experience leading technical teams and influencing architecture decisions across multiple projects.
• Strong stakeholder management, communication, and presentation skills.

Required Technical Skills

• Cloud & Azure: Azure architecture, cloud-native solutions, application modernization, security, observability, configuration and secrets management.
• Application Architecture: Enterprise architecture, APIs, microservices, event-driven systems, integrations, and distributed applications.
• Development: .NET/C#, ASP.NET Core, REST APIs, Angular, TypeScript, and modern software engineering practices.
• DevSecOps: Azure DevOps, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, deployment governance, automation, and secure SDLC.
• Security: Zero Trust, IAM, OAuth/OIDC, threat modeling, data protection, encryption, and compliance.
• Quality Engineering: Shift-Left, BDD, TDD, automated testing, and quality gates.

Preferred Qualifications

• Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification.
• Experience within Federal, Government, or highly regulated environments.
• Experience with cloud modernization initiatives and legacy application transformation.
• Experience implementing enterprise observability and operational excellence frameworks.
• Experience defining platform engineering and enterprise DevSecOps strategies.
