About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and technically strong Senior Structural Engineer to join our growing London-based design consultancy.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Senior Structural Engineer who enjoys taking ownership of projects, developing technically robust and commercially viable solutions, and working closely with clients, architects, contractors and multidisciplinary design teams.

You will play a key role in the delivery of structural engineering projects from early feasibility and concept design through to detailed design and construction. The role will involve both technical design and project leadership, with opportunities to take responsibility for junior engineers and contribute to the continued development of the structural engineering team.

Our projects span a variety of sectors, including data centres, energy, industrial and logistics, commercial, retail, residential and other complex developments, providing exposure to technically challenging projects in the UK and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the structural engineering design of projects from feasibility and concept through to detailed design and construction.
• Undertake structural analysis and design using first-principles engineering judgement and appropriate analytical methods.
• Develop safe, practical, sustainable and cost-effective structural solutions.
• Prepare and review structural calculations, specifications, reports and technical documentation.
• Coordinate structural designs with architects, civil engineers, MEP consultants, contractors and other project stakeholders.
• Produce and review structural drawings and BIM information in collaboration with technicians and BIM teams.
• Take responsibility for the technical delivery of projects within your area of expertise.
• Manage project workloads, programmes and deliverables to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
• Monitor project milestones and identify potential technical, programme or resource issues at an early stage.
• Liaise directly with clients and attend project and design team meetings.
• Understand project scopes, appointments, deliverables and fee allowances, identifying additional requirements where appropriate.
• Identify and manage interfaces with contractor design portions and third-party design responsibilities.
• Undertake design reviews, checking and technical assurance in accordance with internal quality procedures.
• Contribute to value engineering and design optimisation throughout the project lifecycle.
• Consider embodied carbon and whole-life performance when developing structural solutions.
• Support the investigation and assessment of existing structures, including retrofit and alteration projects where required.
• Provide technical guidance, mentoring and day-to-day support to graduate and junior engineers.
• Review and check work produced by less experienced members of the team.
• Assist senior management with project planning, resource allocation and technical delivery.
• Contribute to the continued development of engineering standards, processes and best practice within the business.

Technical Experience

The successful candidate will have strong experience in structural engineering design and will be confident taking responsibility for projects and technical deliverables.

You should have experience with:

• Structural analysis and design from first principles.
• Reinforced concrete, steel and other common structural materials.
• Building structures and complex developments.
• Preparation and checking of structural calculations.
• Detailed structural design and construction documentation.
• Working within multidisciplinary design teams.
• Technical coordination with architects, contractors and other consultants.
• UK structural design standards and relevant industry guidance.
• Design development from concept through to construction.
• Engineering design software and digital/BIM workflows.

Experience with AutoCAD, Revit and Tekla would be advantageous, together with familiarity with modern structural analysis and design software.

Experience in one or more of the following sectors would also be beneficial:

International project experience and familiarity with working to different international codes and standards would be advantageous.

Qualifications & Professional Development

• Degree qualified in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
• Chartered Engineer status, or demonstrable progression towards chartership, is highly desirable.
• Membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) or equivalent professional body is advantageous.
• Demonstrable experience working within a structural engineering consultancy environment.
• Evidence of continued professional development and commitment to maintaining technical knowledge.

Leadership & Project Management

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will be expected to take an active role in both technical delivery and team development.

You will:

• Lead and manage elements of projects with appropriate support from Associates and Directors.
• Coordinate and prioritise workloads within project teams.
• Support the development of junior engineers and technicians through mentoring and on-the-job training.
• Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Take ownership of project deliverables and deadlines.
• Identify risks and communicate issues promptly to senior management.
• Contribute to project reviews, resource planning and technical strategy.
• Support business development and client relationship management where appropriate.
