Job Description

Job Description:
We are seeking a Search Data Scientist / Search Relevance Engineer to help improve search and discovery across large, rapidly changing content collections. This role combines information retrieval, data science, NLP, and search engineering, with a strong focus on improving and measuring search relevance.
Responsibilities
  • Design, configure, and tune hybrid search combining BM25/lexical retrieval with vector and embedding-based search.
  • Improve retrieval, ranking, and relevance within Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or similar search platforms.
  • Develop and test query classification, intent detection, query expansion, and routing approaches.
  • Build and evaluate reranking, filtering, deduplication, thresholding, and result diversification strategies.
  • Apply NLP techniques including entity recognition, disambiguation, semantic similarity, and embedding-based retrieval.
  • Analyze search failures and relevance gaps and recommend improvements.
  • Develop search evaluation frameworks using relevance judgments, benchmark datasets, Precision/Recall, MRR, nDCG, A/B testing, and other appropriate metrics.
  • Partner with engineering and product teams to move search improvements from experimentation into production.
  • Optimize search solutions for relevance, latency, scalability, and cost.
Qualifications
  • 4 -9 + years of experience in search, information retrieval, data science, or a related field.
  • Strong Python skills.
  • Hands-on experience configuring and tuning Elasticsearch or OpenSearch.
  • Strong understanding of BM25, vector search, embeddings, KNN/ANN, hybrid retrieval, and lexical/vector fusion techniques such as RRF.
  • Experience with search ranking and relevance tuning, including post-retrieval reranking.
  • Experience working with large-scale, semi-structured, and rapidly changing datasets.
  • Ability to evaluate search quality and demonstrate measurable improvements.
  • Experience delivering search or ML solutions into production environments.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
Additional info:
  • Must have Opensearch or Elasticsearch
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.
